Problem with pegasus

Hi,

I used to have a window poping up telling me the subject of the message
I received. I have a StarMax 3000/180. When I'm working on another
Power Macintosh, it's working well. I checked the configuration of
pegasus on both machines and they're exacly the same. Is there anything
missing in my operating system that would bring back this window?

[A] Music and Audio Macs

The answer depends greatly on what music and audio programs you are
running. If you are at the pro level with Sonic Solutions or
Digidesign, then those companies maintain lists of "approved" Macs. The
URLs are:

Sonic Solutions:
http://www.sonicsolutions.com/html/sonicstudio/sonicstudio_compatibility.html

Digidesign:
http://www.digidesign.com/Newdigiweb/Digiservice/Compatofolder/compatindex.html

Macromedia, who makes Deck II and Soundedit 16, maintains a site with
some compatibility information. Try:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/deck/
http://www.macromedia.com/support/soundedit/

For some BIAS Peak compatibility info:
http://www.bias-inc.com/toolkit/sysreq_frame.html

If you are using another program that I haven't mentioned, check the
ReadMe file, or the company website. They should have all the info you
need.

The shorter answer to your question? You are safer with a 604 series
(or even 601) processor than 603 series. You are safer with faster
processors, but not the bleeding edge of technology. And (as much as I
dislike saying it) you are a little safer with a genuine Apple than a
clone. This is not to say that people haven't recorded, edited, and
mastered good audio using 603 based clones running at 120 MHz (for
example). YMMV.

[Q] Mac OS 8 and Tabbed windows

I've been very pleased with the upgrade to 8, but I have noticed one tiny
annoying thing. I keep a few folders of aliases to my most used
applications tabbed a the bottom of my screen. The titles fit neatly into
the reduced 'tab' for a few days and then the size of the 'tab' shrinks
and truncates the titles of the folders. It's easy to fix - I just drag
them out as windows again and then drag them back as tabs. Still, I am
interested to see if anyone else has this problem and if anyone has a
more permanent or more elegant fix for it.

Yours,

[Q] MAC-OS - German-localized? International-English?

Lieber Sven,

and dear all others who replied to my question

THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR MOST VALUABLE INFO!!

I dig it how supportive and knowledgeable y'all are.

A standard phrase of mine -- when I again showed off to my
friends/colleagues how cool & geeky I am -- is: I GOT IT ON INFO-MAC!

> I use US-versions since 7.6 on two "German" macs [..]
> [..] video editing in the PAL format doesn't seem to be a problem.

thanks a lot.

It seems I'm gonna get myself a US system soon.

Funny thing only is that none of the German distributors seem to be
supportive in this case. UpToDate doesn't have and doesn't seem to want;
Claris Germany doesn't have and doesn't want... I'll check Claris Int'l,
otherwise I'll have to go to InnoTech or similar in Germany, who doesn't
give me the option to upgrade for a cheaper price.

Everybody of the official distributors sez "US system *is not to be sold*
in Germany", as if Apple or the Government disapprove of this.

May be poss that I need to get new/English ISDN software some day, but
that'll only be when I abandon my LAN.

Yes: Quark XPress only runs on the localized system it's built for --
exycept if you get the *dongled* international version: XPress Passport,
but they'll give one a discount when upgrading to XPress 4, so I made no
real loss by getting the ca. $150 (?) Passport. XPress 4 will be
international (and dongled!) for all users.

And I'll re-name my CD play list to the English name so I can re-use my
long list of music CDs.

Okay, thanks all, I'll update you (the list) if any contrary news should
pass my way.

Cheers,

Tom

My perception was that the transfer to new server digs - and the resulting
hiatus - slowed down the subsequent postings. I personally like the
digest mode, am glad to get the notices of software additions, but still
like the Q & A postings the best.

Yes, there *are* a lot of specialized (and useful) "botique" lists, and
yes, the noise level on the Internet has risen dramatically, but I still
think (and hope) that there will remain a need for the Info-Mac Digest.
Let's give it more time before declaring the institution moribund (or
already dead).

Al Bloom's Comments

I have been a regular follower of the digest over the last several years
and have always found it to be helpful for keeping up on the latest in
useful (or non-) Mac programs and help with problems.
That said, I think there is real merit to the idea of splitting the digest
into two parts--"programs" and "help." When I get the digest (I download
it from comp-sys-mac-digests) I usually scan the programs to see if the
titles interest me but I read all of the help requests or replies.
Splitting the digest would make this a little easier.
I also like the recently posted idea of making a portion of IMD a "digest
of digests" although I find it difficult to believe the moderators would be
able to devote the time for the effort this would take.
I'm sure there are many like me who have never posted but have relied on
the digest for an intelligent source of assistance and a comprehensive list
of what's new. The moderators have my greatest thanks for your past
efforts and support for whatever you decide will be done...you haven't let
us down yet.

Converting to-from Nisus Writer

Hello all:

I've used Nisus Writer off and on over the years. I want to use it more
frequently but I really need to be able to open WordPerfect (Mac) 3.x
files. Tried the Nisus 5.01 demo (updated to 504). No go. Tried DataViz
9 (what comes with system 8). Sort of. Loses a lot of formatting. Loses
too much formatting. Any sugggestions?

Also, there was a Nisus mailing list. Would someone post or email the
listserve address. Then I'll try posting my query there.

TIA,

DOS CARD, 6100 and HEAT

Recently my collegue and I bought APPLE DOS cards for our PowerMac 6100s.
I was waiting for my new internal harddrive to arrive before I installed
mine. In the meantime my collegue installed his and has been leaving his
case top off due to the heat generated where the card is.. He initially
became aware because an ejected CDROM was quite HOT.

Has anybody experienced excessive heat generated from these cards?

Has anyone installed extra fans, and if so was it easy to do?

Are there any URLs discussing this matter?

Thanks in advance for your help. My computer sits in one of those computer
cabinets and I was already wondering if I should be worrying about heat
generation. I am eagerly awaiting responses before I install my card.

Thanks in advance,

Epson Color Stylus 600 on LC2

A friend called last week for suggestions on replacing he aging ImageWriter
1 printer. I suggested the Color Stylus 600, since the output is great and
the cost is reasonable, over the soon-to-be-dropped Apple (HP) color
printers.

She picked one up at Circuit City, where she was assured by the very
helpful salesperson that it would work fine with her LC2. After unpacking,
she noticed that the printer extensions were on a CD ROM and not on floppy,
but for the additional charge of $9.95, they would be glad to send her the
2 floppies. She called me.

Having previously installed a 600 on my daughters LC475, I just copied the
disk folders from the CD ROM and took them to her house, but I asked to
watch while she installed them. The read me file noted that the 600 would
not work with an LC2. I called Epson (30 minutes wait) and the technician
said there would be no problem, but that it needed more memory, at least 8
MB.

Her LC2 was the el cheapo model, 4MB RAM and 40 MB HD, and a 12 inch RGB
monitor. I had some old Quadra 700 RAM lying around, so I installed 2-4MB
simms bringing the total to 10MB. I trashed all the extra copies of AOL she
had on the drive (4, I think). This gave some disk space to work in.

The LC2 would still not recognize the Epson 600, even though the software
installed correctly. I thought perhaps they had changed the software, so I
went to my Mac and connected to Epson's home page, looking for the
software. I found it and downloaded it, but it was the same. I decided to
check in the tech support section for downloads, and there I found a patch
for using the 600 and 800 on an LC2.

Once installed, the printer works fine, although very slowly, since the
computer does the processing.

Future Direction of Info-Mac (fwd)

To be honest, if you used a decent email program this wouldn't be a
problem. In Eudora, the digests come oput as an attachment which when
double-clicked gives you a whole mailbox window of the messages. You can
correctly reply to these, which will send the reply to the original sender
(nice for not cluttering the list with too many trivial responses)

>I prefer single messages to bulk digests, as I can read each message as I

Again, I suggest Eudora, as the individual messages will still be flagged
as unread.

Pine's great when you want to send something quickly from un*x, but in
today's world, it's not all that good of an email client. Eudora can be
used even if you're stuck with just shell access as it doesn't require TCP
access.

Just my opinion,

Help! Sybase and MUI apps or virus?

A most unusual occurrence: two Macs in a lab running MUI and Sybase
Config from Sybase to access our university UNIX based library catalog
server have totally crashed, one after the other. Trying to figure out
what has happened. First symptom is corruption of app, finder, and system
icons, then two directories, then in one case, a second hard drive icon
appearing out of nowhere. Don't know if there is a new virus out there or
if it this particular application. Both Macs (7200/75 with 24 Mbs RAM,
system 7.6.1) had to be reinitialized and then instaled MAC OS 8. On
quitting Sybase again and shutting down, system error 41, shut down
stopped. Please respond to me directly if anyone can offer advice. Thank
you very much.

If you want freeware, Apple still offers Disk Copy with all of the

TCP/IP slip error #

I recently upgraded my 7200 to system 8.0. I use InteSlip to
connect to a server. I have been using this conncetion method
for about 2 years without any problems. For 2 weeks everything
worked fine. Then one day while using Eudora computer quit
functioning. sine then I have zapped the p-ram too many times
to count. I have reinstalled system 8.0 3, THREE, times. I even
reinstalled system 7.6.1. No matter what I do I get that same
erro message when I try to send or recieve mail, I gett the
error -23009 (This is a TCP resource missing) and then Eudora
goes on to say {TCP:544} when I try to read mail and {TCP:64}
when I try to send. Then is goes on to say "they are already 64
bit streams open or 64 UCP open. What does this mean? HELP

I've called Apple -no help there and I they gave me no options.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO APPLE(?) I tried to connect with InterSlip
and Claris E-mailer lite (no good), I tried Netscape with
InterSlip (Unable to
make a socket connection was the error there) I tried IE 3 and
IE 4 beta (No connection luck there.)

Please is anyone smarter than APPLE? Do you know what might be
wrong.
[btw I doing mail now via an online text editor.]

What is this group?

Well, I noted "Uncle Al" Bloom's posting the other night, but reading
info-mac from a hotel room isn't conducive to composing responses, so I put
it off. I've been reading this list for too many years. (How many of
today's readers remember when the info-mac community banded together to buy
Sumex-Aim a bigger disk drive so the contributions wouldn't fall off the
back end so fast? I wonder if the list of contributors still exists in an
archive someplace?)
I must say that over the years, I've looked into other lists and
discussion groups, but I always came back here. This was the place where
knowledgeable folks tended to hang out, and where honest questions (both
naive and sophisticated) always received knowledgeable answers. This is a
real contrast to most of the lists "out there" where answers tend far too
often fall someplace between speculation and rumor.
I don't want Info-mac to change, I hope those knowledgeable (frequently
professional) users who may have drifted away during the hiatus will slowly
drift back. I'd ask the moderators to not do anything rash until we get a
little further into our new quarters.

"BinHex" has nothing to do with self-extracting or not. It is a way to
store/transport Mac files on/over non-Mac machines.

You need to de-binhex the files first, then you get your self-extracting
files. Try to get StuffIt Expander from someone (or the BinHex
application itself, or another utility which de-binhexes) from a friend
or a user group.

Good luck, Christian.

Sorry, but this sentence makes no legal sense. Either it's in the public
domain, or it is not. If it is, then there is no copyright protection
attached to it. If it is not, then it is simply free, but not in the
public domain.

And, you can't copyright ideas, only the expression thereof.
