WCW Monday Nitro Report for April 13, 1998

Hosted by Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay, Larry Zbyszko, and Bobby Heenan Live from Minneapolis, Minnesota

• To kick off Nitro, we saw Roddy Piper's interview from last week's Nitro program.

• WCW commentators discussed the bat match, that is set for Spring Stampede.

• Scott Steiner w/Vincent defeated Fit Finley by making him submit to the Steiner Recliner.
-Vincent brought out Scott Steiner's trophy, and showed it off throughout the match. As of now, it is unknown what the trophy symbolizes. During this match, Scott Steiner got into a brief argument with Larry Hennig, who was sitting in his ringside seat. After Fit Finley rammed his shoulder into the middle turnbuckle, Scott Steiner took advantage, executing a back suplex from the top rope. Steiner then strapped Finley in the Steiner Recliner. Finley submitted to let Scott Steiner obtain the victory.

• Before WCW went to a commercial break, we saw some pre-recorded comments from Bret Hart. Bret Hart basically discussed his future in WCW. More comments were aired throughout the show.

• Ultimo Dragon defeated Lenny Lane by making him submit to the Dragon Sleeper.
-Lenny Lane gave Ultimo Dragon a hard time, by countering most of his moves. After Lane missed a suplex, Ultimo Dragon strapped him in the Dragon Sleeper. Ultimo Dragon didn't have the submissoin maneuver applied correctly at first. Therefore, he kicked Lane, and put him in the Dragon Sleeper again. Lane submitted to let Ultimo Dragon obtain the victory.
• WCW commentators continued to talk about Spring Stampede. We then went backstage, where Gene Okerlund was interviewing Roddy Piper. Piper announced a Nash vs. Hogan match would happen later in the show and after the match, Piper would go after Hogan. As Piper was talking, Hollywood Hogan and his Disciple attacked him. The Disciple gave Piper the "Apocalypse", and WCW later announced Piper received medical attention.
• Giant Interview.
-The Giant first started off by talking about NWO's attack on Roddy Piper. He said Piper would be fine, especially for his Spring Stampede tag team match. The Giant continued to talk about his Spring Stampede match, with him and Roddy Piper taking on Hollywood Hogan and Kevin Nash.
• Johnny Grunge defeated Chavo Guerrero, Jr. via Pinfall. -Both wrestlers were surprisingly not accompanied by anyone. In the match, Chavo Guerrero, Jr. used a lot of quickness and aggressiveness, while Grunge used powerful maneuvers. In the end, Guerrero went for a flip from the top rope, thinking he could get under Grunge to pin him. However, Grunge reversed Chavo's move into a pin. With too much weight on Chavo, the pin was secured, for Johnny Grunge to recieve the victory.

• Kevin Nash Interview.
-Kevin Nash first started off by announcing Hollywood Hogan was not in the building. Apparently, he left because he was afraid of Nash. As Nash started to discuss matters on Sting, Sting and J.J. Dillion came down to the ring. Sting told Nash he could have a title shot later in the show. Sting then gave Nash his baseball bat, and both of them started to argue. J.J. Dillion told them to stop their argument, and the fight would have to wait until later in the show. Dillion also legalized the powerbomb, after both Sting and Nash requested it. The match was set for the Nitro main event; Nash would take on Sting, instead of Hogan.

• Chris Benoit defeated Glacier by making him submit to the Crippler Crossface.
-Chris Benoit dominated most of the match, but showedd a lot of fatigue. Benoit dragged Glacier down to put him in the Crippler Crossface. Glacier submitted to let Chris Benoit obtain the victory.

• WCW commentators talked about the Kevin Nash vs. Sting world title match that would happen later in the show. We also saw some footage from Thunder, of the Eric Bischoff and Arn Anderson confrontation.

• Buff Bagwell and Eric Bischoff Interview. -Bischoff was showing signs of backpain, from the suplex he received from Rick Steiner on Thunder. Bagwell said he would get Rick Steiner for that, while Bischoff said Hogan would too. Bischoff also said Hogan wasn't on Nitro because he would be on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Bagwell finished things off by saying he would be victorious in his match with Luger, that would happen after the interview.

• Lex Luger defeated Buff Bagwell w/Eric Bischoff by Disqualificaiton. -Both wrestlers made this match very physical. After Lex Luger had Bagwell in the Torture Rack, Eric Bischoff attacked Luger -- kicking him. Luger then put Eric Bischoff in the Torture Rack, making Scott Steiner come in. It was three NWO members attacking Lex Luger. Finally, Rick Steiner ran in to scare off the NWO.

• Chris Jericho defeated Super Calo by making him submit to the Lion Tamer, retaining the WCW Cruisweight Title.
-Chris Jericho first started off by teasing Super Calo. He was going to take off his mask, but he used it as a trick to take the beginning advantage. After Super Calo missed a move from a top rope, Chris Jericho reversed it into the Lion Tamer. Super Calo submitted, to let Jericho obtain the victory, and retain the WCW Cruiserweight Title. Afterwards, Prince Iaukea threw Jericho out of the ring.

• Saturn defeated Hammer by making him submit to the Rings of Saturn. -Before this match, Kidman tried to make some piece between Saturn and Hammer, but was unsuccessful. In the match itself, both wrestlers used a lot of submission maneuvers. Saturn executed the Gargoyle Plex, followed by the Rings of Saturn, to get the win.

• Bill Goldberg defeated Rocco Rock with the Jackhammer. -Rocco Rock put up a tough fight for Goldberg. When Rock placed his table in the corner of the ring, Goldberg rammed him into it. Followed by that was the Jackhammer for the win. Afterwards, Saturn was going to go after Goldberg, but Raven stopped him. However, Kidman and Sick Boy went after Goldberg, but Goldberg was able to take them out.

• WCW commentators discussed Bill Goldbergs victory on Rocco Rock. We also saw a special video-look at Goldberg.

• Curt Hennig w/Rick Rude defeated Yugi Nagata w/Sonny Onoo with the Hennig Plex.
-When Hennig and Rude were coming down to the ring, Rude went over the to commentating team. He said he wouldn't commentate during the match, because there was two special guests at ringside, which were Rude and Hennig's fathers. Hennig was able to dominate most of the match, with help from Rick Rude. Hennig finished Nagata off with the Hennig Plex. During this match, Larry Hennig (Curt Hennig's father) revealed a "Hennig Rules" T-Shirt. After the match, Nagata was handcuffed to the ring and attacked by both Hennig and Rude.

• Booker T. defeated La Parka with the Missle Dropkick, retaining the WCW Television Title.
-After the Harlem Sidekick, Booker T. defeated La Parka with the Missle Dropkick, retaining the WCW Television Title. Afterwards, La Parka was going to attack Booker T. with a chair, but Chris Benoit stopped him. Benoit and Booker T. then got into a brief confrontation.

• We saw a special look on what has led up to the Diamond Dallas Page vs. Raven United States title Spring Stampede match.

• Diamond Dallas Page defeated Rage w/Kaos with the Diamond Cutter, retaining the WCW United States Title.
-Rage struggled throughout the match. When DDP was going for Diamond Cutter, Kaos tried to interfere, but was unsuccessful. DDP swong Rage to the corner, and executed the Diamond Cutter. DDP secured the pin to obtain the victory, and retain the WCW United States Title (Raven still has the unrightful possession of the title). Afterwards, Raven's Flock attacked DDP, but somehow, DDP was able to get out of it. During that attack, a fan clipped Raven from behind, while he was taunting DDP.

• Rick Steiner w/Ted Dibiase defeated Konnan w/Vincent with the Bulldog. -Rick Steiner countered most of Konnan's moves. When Rick Steiner went for the Bulldog, Vincent tried to attack him, but Dibiase put a stop to Vincent. Rick Steiner was able to execute the Bulldog on Konnan to receive the victory.

• WCW commentators described the recent attacks on Randy Savage, including the one last Monday on Nitro. We then saw a special look at NWO controversy.

• Kevin Nash defeated Sting by Disqualification, letting Sting retain the WCW Heavyweight Title.
-Kevin Nash dominated most of this match with all of his power. Everytime Sting went for a move, Nash was on top of it. When Sting started to have the advantage of the match, Randy Savage interfered. The referee didn't see it, because he was distracted by Elizabeth. Nash first missed a very close pin. He then Powerbombed Sting and went for a second pin, but Bret Hart pulled the referee out of the ring. Kevin Nash was announced the winner by Disqualification. Bret Hart strapped Nash in the Sharpshooter, but the NWO came in to stop him. Nitro went off the air with Bret Hart attacking the NWO.
