The Streak

2131 Night :

"I know that if Lou Gehrig is looking down on tonights activities, he is'nt concerned about someone playing more consecutive games than he did. Instead he is veiwing tonight as a example of what is right and good about this great American game."

-Cal Ripken, Jr.

2632 Cal Ripken has played many baseball games in his life. One of his most recent records was "The Streak". The Streak is 2131 consecutive games. This record was recently accomplished by Baltimore Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. He accomplished this feat on September 6, 1995. The Streak has officialy ended leaving Cal with an incredible 2632 consecutive games. What started on May 30, 1982, ended on September 20, 1998, when Cal decided to sit this one out a game on the 30th against the New York Yankees.

The record was formally held by New York Yankee Lou Gehrig. Some say Lou Gehrig was the greatest first baseman ever to play the game. He played every game from June 1, 1925 to May 2, 1939. His streak ended when a disease started affecting the nerves that controlled his muscles. He died of the illness - now known as the Lou Gehrig desease - just two years later.
