Descendants of Jonathan Rawlings

Generation No. 1

1. JONATHAN1 RAWLINGS died 1665 in Northumberland Co., VA.

Notes for JONATHAN RAWLINGS:

Children of JONATHAN RAWLINGS are:

2. i. ANTHONY2 RAWLINGS, b. Bef. 1665; d. Bet. April 21, 1713 - November 28, 1716, Westmoreland Co., VA.

3. ii. WILLIAM RAWLINGS, b. Bef. 1665; d. Bet. December 04, 1717 - March 26, 1718, Westmoreland Co., VA.

Generation No. 2

2. ANTHONY2 RAWLINGS (JONATHAN1) was born Bef. 1665, and died Bet. April 21, 1713 - November 28, 1716 in Westmoreland Co., VA1. He married MARTHA Bet. 1682 - 1689.

Notes for ANTHONY RAWLINGS:

In Westmoreland Co., VA by 1697 (appraisor). There is also an Ann Rawlings mentioned in Westmoreland Co, VA by 1704. And also a William by 1699 (died 1717-1718}. See RFHA June 1990, p 4 & 5 and June 1994 p.15.

Anthony is not listed on the first Northumberland Index, 1648-1652. There is a John or Jonathan with a Northumberland will there in 1665. May have been the father of Anthony. RFHA Dec 1988, p.7. If so then, Anthony would have to be born bef 1665.

See RFHA June 1994 p.15.

July 28, 1714 - Martha Rawlings, executrix of Anthony Rawlings, dedeased, "of great age and weakness". That seems to indicate that she was old, say over 50 or 60. That would say she was born before 1664 and perhaps before 1654.

Feb. 26, 1707/8 - Richard Rawlings petitioned for child's part of estate of Wm. Cohoron; married a daughter. 1709/09 - Christian Cohoron died, Eliz. Cohoron, executrix, received the estate. 1709 - Wm Wheeler acting on behalf of Eliz. Cohoron. 1716 - Wm Wheeler & Eliza to Jonathan Rawlins, son of Richard.

This indicates Richard was md in 1708 so he must have been born bef 1690 and also that Anthony must have been born bef 1673.

June 26, 1718 - Samuel Rawlins, defendant - George Dunbar, plaintiff. The cause, debt.

This indicates that Samuel was over 21 i.e. born bef 1697.

Also see RFHA Dec 1994 p.54.

From Wills of Westmoreland Co., VA 1654-1800 compiled by Augusta B. Fothergill

p.60 Anthony Rawlings, will made Apr 21, 1713 proved Nov. 28, 1716. To my sons Richard and Samuel, land; and personal estate at death of my wife Martha.

p.109 John Ashton, will made Apr 6, 1739; proved Apr 29, 1740. Among other bequests, to Richard Rallings his rent now due, one of the items to collect.

p. 128 - Samuel Rallings, will made Aug. 17, 1749; proved Apr 24, 1750. To wife Martha, estate for life; to son Samuel, etc; to children Benjamin and Martha land; to dtr. Mary residue of estate.

p.137 Benjamin Rallins, will proved Jan 28, 1755. Land and negroes to brother Samuel; Sister Mary Whiting 2 negroes; to her dtr. Ann under 18 yrs, etc. Exec: John Whiting.

RFHA June 1997 p.24.

Anthony of Westmoreland VA, whose will was dated Apr 21, 1713 and probated Nov 28, 1716. Wife's name was Marha ___. The Witnessses for the inventory of the estate were Robert Enoble and Thomas Marshall. He had two sons, Richan\d and Samuel. He also lived at one time on the property owned by John Washington, the grandfaher of George Washington.

RFHA Sep 1998 p,39 says Anthony was the Appraiser of Westmoreland Co, VA in 1697, 1698, 1704, 1705.

Children of ANTHONY RAWLINGS and MARTHA are:

4. i. RICHARD3 RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1683 - 1690.

5. ii. SAMUEL RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1683 - 1697, Westmoreland Co., VA; d. Bet. August 17, 1749 - April 24, 1750, Westmoreland Co., VA.

3. WILLIAM2 RAWLINGS (JONATHAN1) was born Bef. 1665, and died Bet. December 04, 1717 - March 26, 1718 in Westmoreland Co., VA2.

Notes for WILLIAM RAWLINGS:

Westmoreland Co., VA Wills p. 65 William Rollins, 4 Dec 1717 - 26 Mar 1718. To Sarah Sebastion 1 calf; my three children Philip, aged 12 next Nov. Mary, aged 9 years next Jan.. and Thomas, aged 7 years next Mar.. to Phillip Dolan until they come of age.

See RFHA June 1991 pg 2. Says Sarah Sebastion is the wife and she was born abt 1694. That makes no sense. First her name would be Sarah Rollins in the will if she were the wife, second she would be identified as the wife, and third her birth date would mean that she had her kids at age 12! I think the kids mother was probably a Dolan, and perhaps Ann Dolan since there was an Ann Rollins there in 1704. I think Sarah Sebastian was a married daughter (married to William).

RFHA Sep 1998, p.37. Wm Sebastian (son of Stephen Sebastian) witnessed will of Wm Rollins 24 Dec 1717, in Westmoreland Co., VA. Sarah Sebastian (probate wife of Wm Sebastian the witness) inherited one cow calf....Rollin's will suggests that Sarah Rollins md William Sebastian sometime before 1717.

See also RFHA June 1994 pg 15 and RFHA Dec 1994 p.45-46.

Note also that Wm may have been a son or brother of Anthony/Martha who had Richard and Samuel. Richard born bef 1690.

RFHA Dec 1994 p.45 says Wm was born 1681; wife Sarah Sebastian (don't believe that); ch. Puilip, Mary and Thomas.

RFHA Mar 1995 p.3 also indicates that Sarah is not likel the mother of the children or wife of Wm. Guesses that she may be a married daughter.

Richard Rawlings, m. a Miss Cohoron, dau of Wm Cohoron. They had son Jonathan who md a Mary __ and had 3 children - Rebeccah, Mary and Ann.

Child of RICHARD RAWLINGS and COHORON is:

7. i. JONATHAN4 RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1700 - 1715; d. November 27, 1739, Westmoreland Co., VA.

5. SAMUEL3 RAWLINGS (ANTHONY2, JONATHAN1) was born Bet. 1683 - 1697 in Westmoreland Co., VA3, and died Bet. August 17, 1749 - April 24, 1750 in Westmoreland Co., VA4. He married MARTHA.

RFHA Sep 1997, p.30. Wills - Westmoreland Co., VA: Samuel Rollins Aug. 17, 1749; proved May 10, 1750. To wife Martha, son Benjamin, son Samuel Jr. - major bequests. Rest to four children: Benjamin, Martha, Mary, and Samuel Jr. Witnesses: David Piper and Thomas Marshall.

Children of SAMUEL RAWLINGS and MARTHA are:

i. SAMUEL4 RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1700 - 1735, Westmoreland Co., VA; m. MARGARET.

Notes for SAMUEL RAWLINGS:

RFHA Dec 1994 p.46 Samuel Jr. who chose a James Cash as guardian in 1756. He married a Margaret ___. Check on this. It would imply that Samuel Jr was less than about 16 in 1756 so born c1740. That's too late for this one. Perhaps his son.

ii. BENJAMIN RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1700 - 1735, Westmoreland Co., VA; d. January 28, 1755, Westmoreland Co., VA5.

RFHA Mar 1995 P.3

William Wharton, husband of widowed Mary, was appointed guardian to John and Mary's children; Mary, Rebecca and Ann on March 31, 1741. The records indicate the estate was mismanaged by Wharton. Augustine Weedon was appointed guardian to Rebecca on June 24, 1746; and Reichar Rallings (no relationship stated) to Ann on April 26, 1748. No mention was made of the infant Mary so I assume she was deceased. Rebecca married the Rev. Archibald Campbell Jan. 15, 1753. Ann chose him as her guardian on Mov. 27, 1753. Rebecca died March 21, 1754 in the 20th year of her age. This per her tombstone which is the only remaining artifact of Round hill Church (formerly in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, but now part of King George Co.). Buried with Rebecca was her infant son Alexander Campbell.

Notice this Bedford Co VA Will of Benjamin Rawlings. Witness Archibald Campbell.

RFHA June 1996 p.16. From Beverly Allan 1162 West Monterey, Stockton, CA 95204. Bedford Co, VA Will BK 1, p.256.

"In the name of God, Amen, this 20th day of Dec 1776, I Benjamin Rawlings of Bedford Co,...I leave to my Mother, Ann Rawlings, during her natural life the land and plantation whereon she now lives, and after her decease I give the said land and plantation to my brother, John Rawlings, to him and his heirs forever. Likewise al the wages that is due to me for being a soldier, and my rifle gun which I desire may be sold, and other debts that is or may be due to me, to be raised and payment to be made to discharge a Bond which may be due to Capt. George Caldwell. And what remains, I give to my mother to make use of during her life. And after her decease to my sister Ann Rawlings: likewise my cattle I leave to my Mother to have the sole use of until my said sister Ann comes to lawful age or marries. If Ann should die before she comes to lawful age or marries, then the said estate I give my mother Ann Rawlings and her heirs forever. Moreover I appoint and constitute my friend Mr. Vincent Glass, Executor... Signed Benjamin Rawlings in the presence of: Archibald Campbell, Jacob Marr, Nathaniel Tanner. Proved May 25, 1777.

Recall that Ann Rawlings, sister of Rebecca d. 1754, was under guardianship of Rebecca's husband Archibald Campbell. It would seem from above that Archibald moved to Bedford Co. Perhaps Ann did too. Archibald witness will of Benjamin Rawlings in Bedford, son of Anthony b. 1735. Perhaps Anthony was a brother of Rebecca and Ann or if not, perhaps a cousin. They were all born about the same time. Perhaps Anthony and Archibald moved to Bedford Co together. Recall that the grandfather of Jonathan was Anthony. It would make sense that one of his sons or their sons would name a child Anthony.

Children of JONATHAN RAWLINGS and MARY are:

9. i. REBECCA5 RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1734, Westmoreland Co., VA; d. March 21, 1754, King George Co., VA.

ii. ANN RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1736, Westmoreland Co., VA.

Recall that Ann Rawlings, sister of Rebecca d. 1754, was under guardianship of Rebecca's husband Archibald Campbell. It would seem from above that Archibald moved to Bedford Co. Perhaps Ann did too. I wonder if Benjamin and John were her brothers. If so they would be born 1730-1740. He dies in 1777 (at 37-47). Seems a little old for a soldier with no wife or kids. Strange - I suppose this could be another Achibald Campbell that was also connected to Rawlings, but that also seems unlikely.

iii. MARY RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1738, Westmoreland Co., VA.

Notes for MARY RAWLINGS:

Likely died before 1748. See RFHA Mar 1995 p.3

8. MARY4 RAWLINGS (SAMUEL3, ANTHONY2, JONATHAN1) was born Bet. 1700 - 1735 in Westmoreland Co., VA. She married JOHN WHITING.

Child of MARY RAWLINGS and JOHN WHITING is:

i. ANN5 WHITING, b. Bet. 1738 - 1754.

9. REBECCA5 RAWLINGS (JONATHAN4, RICHARD3, ANTHONY2, JONATHAN1) was born Abt. 1734 in Westmoreland Co., VA6, and died March 21, 1754 in King George Co., VA. She married ARCHIBALD CAMBELL January 15, 1753 in Westmoreland Co., VA.

Notes for REBECCA RAWLINGS:
