Descendants of William Rawlings

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 RAWLINGS was born Bef. 1719, and died June 25, 1787 in Brunswick Co, VA. He married NAOMI Abt. 1735.

Notes for WILLIAM RAWLINGS:

On list of Brunswick Co VA Tax Payers 1782-1787 along with his son Wm Jr.

RFHA Dec 1989, p.16 says Henry, Reese, and William were on the 1787 tax payer list for Brunswick Co and Richmond was on the Dinwiddie Co VA rolls. Where was brother John?

Note that there was a Thomas Rawlings in Brunswick Co before 1735. Brunswick Co Court 3 July 1735. Thoams Wison came into Court & presented & acknowledged deeds of lease & release to ....Thomas Rawlins....

Brunswick, VA, Indenture made 26 June 1750, between William DUGGER (NOTE POSSIBLE CONNECTION WITH SARAH DUGGAR, WIFE OF HIS SON HENRY) of Brunswick County, and Benjamin Lanier of same, &lbs 23, 200a, on both sides of Beechlick Branch, and bounded as by Letters Patent dated 12 January 1746. Signed Wm. Dugger. Wit: Sampson Lanier, William Rawlings, John Marshall. Brunswick, Indenture made the 28th day of April, 1760, between James ROY and Joseph DENTON of Sussex(see Surry), for 35 pounds, conveying 100 acres, adjoining lands of Col. Benjamin HARRISON, William RAWLINGS, and William HARRISON, and being part of the James ROY(Ray??) tract. Witnesses were William DICKSON, Junr. and William HARRISON. Indenture was acknowledged in Court on April 28, 1760, by James ROY, and (wife's name not given), his wife, appeared and relinquished her right of dower. Deed Book 6, page 461--see James Roy deed with David Dunn {post security Stanley Hite}see one James Wray(Ray?) on 1782 Halifax census.--No Joseph Denton mentioned anywhere else in Brunswick, but see Benjamin Harrison(also above), James Johnson, Joseph Hightower. Some other Denton are listed in Brunswick, see Peter Denton----see William Rawlings mary Mary d/o Alexander Roberts

Note that his dau Mary md a Rice and in Stafford Co. VA a Richard Rawlings to Katherine Rice Apr 11, 1746. There is a large Rawlings contingent in Stafford Co as early as 1716. See RFHA Sep 1993 p.37.

Notes for NAOMI:

I suspect that Naomi may be a Reese.

p. 264 Benjamin Harrison of Brunswick Co. Va. deeds negro Aberdeen to daugher Hannah Reese. This is not a will, but a deed Nov. 22, 1783.

Perhaps Naomi and Hannah are related (eg. grand niece)

Children of WILLIAM RAWLINGS and NAOMI are:

i. LUCY2 RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1736, Brunswick Co, VA; m. JOHN HAGOOD, JR, May 12, 1756, Brunswick Co, VA1.

ii. WILLIAM RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1738, Brunswick Co, VA; d. Bef. November 1783, Brunswick Co., VA.

2. iii. REESE RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1740, Brunswick Co, VA.

iv. DOLLY RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1742, Brunswick Co, VA.

Notes for DOLLY RAWLINGS:

Brunswick Co Marriages: Dolly Rawlings m. Henry Hancock, 15 Dec, 1791.

If this is our Dolly, she was 49 when she married. Possible, but not likely.

3. v. HENRY RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1744, Brunswick Co, VA; d. 1807, Hancock Co., GA.

vi. JOHN RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1746, Brunswick Co, VA; d. 1807.

Notes for JOHN RAWLINGS:

On VA Tax Payers list 1782-1787.

Is that true? RFHA Dec 1989, p.16 has the 1787 list and John doesn't seem to be on it. Perhaps he is only on the 1782 list. Need to check this because this John could be my John that went to Charlotte Co. Very doubtful, but need to make sure he is or isn't.

vii. RICHMOND RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1748, Brunswick Co, VA.

Notes for RICHMOND RAWLINGS:

May be the Richmond that is Dinwiddie Co in 1787. Listed on VA Tax Payers list 1787. See RFHA Dec 1989, p.16.

There is a Reese Rawlings in Dinwiddie Co VA in 1810 census with 5 males, 3 females. There is also a Richmond there on the 1787 tax rolls. So it looks like both brothers moved to Dinwiddie Co VA. Reese was still in Brunswick Co in 1787 as were brothers Henry and William. See RFHA Dec 1989, p.16.

viii. ELIZABETH RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1750, Brunswick Co, VA; m. GRANTHAM.

ix. BROMLEY RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1752, Brunswick Co, VA; m. EDWARDS.

Notes for EDWARDS:

Could Harbert Edwards be the husband of Bromley?

This Indenture made the fourth day of September 1786 BETWEEN Joseph Ingram and William Ingram both of the County of Brunswick and State of Virginia . . . for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds . . . doth bargain sell alien release and confirm unto the said William Ingram . . . a Certain Tract or parcel of Land the said Joseph Ingram having his life in the said land without any interruption it lying in the County of Brunswick containing by estimation three hundred Acres . . . and bounded as followeth BEGINNING at a turkey oak on John Phillip's line, thence along the said line to John Webs line, thence along the said line to Cagor Webs line, thence along the said line to Waltons line, thence along the said line to Cotton's line, thence along the said line to Walton's line, thence along the said Walton's line to the BEGINNING . . . Signed by Joseph Ingram and witnessed by Ephraim Jackson, Thomas Phillips, Harbert Edwards, and JAMES RAWLINGS. Brunswick County Court 22d January 1786. This Indenture was proved of the oaths of Ephraim Jackson, Thomas Phillips & Harbert Edwards and ordered to be recorded. Deed Book 14, page 256.

11-155 6 Aug 1773 Priscilla EDWARDS of Brunswick to John DUGGER Jr of same for L15, 43a with was Priscilla's dower of a larger tract of 130a. Wit: Henry RAWLINGS, John BENNETT, Abram BENNETT.

x. MARY RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1754, Brunswick Co, VA; m. RICE.

Notes for MARY RAWLINGS:

There is likely a connection between Jacob Rice Rawlings and this Mary Rawlings who married a Rice. In fact Jacob Rice Rawlings evidently joined the war effort as Jacob Rice.

Notes for RICE:

Here is another Rawlings/Rice marriage. Richard Rawlings m. Apr. 11, 1746, Katherine Rice of Washington Parish. St. Paul's. See RFHA Dec 1991 p. 12.

Also there is Jacob Rice Rawlings in Brunswick Co that seems b bef 1765.

xi. HANNAH RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1756, Brunswick Co, VA; m. HAGOOD, Aft. 1763.

xii. REBECCA RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1758, Brunswick Co, VA; m. PARRISH.

xiii. MARTHA RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1760, Brunswick Co, VA.

Notes for MARTHA RAWLINGS:

There is a Martha Rawlings that died in Brunswick Co 1783 and left will.

RFHA Dec 1988, p.7.

Generation No. 2

2. REESE2 RAWLINGS (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1740 in Brunswick Co, VA. He married CLARISSA BARNES.

Notes for REESE RAWLINGS:

There is a Reese Rawlings in Dinwiddie Co VA in 1810 census with 5 males, 3 females. There is also a Richmond there on the 1787 tax rolls. So it looks like both brothers moved to Dinwiddie Co VA.

It is very doubtful that Peterson was a son of Reese. Mary Harris thought he was, Barbara Browder thinks not - look at the name of his children - no Reese. First son John - likely father is named John. Also, there is evidence that Peterson and James of Brunswick were brothers. See RFHA Mar 1994 p.11

I think James b Nov 1770 was a child of Reese. He has a son Enoch Reece.

Children of REESE RAWLINGS and CLARISSA BARNES are:

i. MINERVA3 RAWLINGS.

ii. MARTHA G. RAWLINGS.

iii. DAVID A. RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1784 - 1787, Brunswick Co, VA; m. MARY BARNES, February 14, 1807, Brunswick Co., VA.

Notes for DAVID A. RAWLINGS:

Brunswick Co marriages: Davy Rawlings and Mary Barnes.. Feb 14, 1807.

This is probably David's marriage.

There is a David Rawlings in Berkeley Co in 1810 with 3 males, and 1 female.

Note there is a David Rawlings Will in Green Co, TN WB ?, p 23 October 1827

To wife Nancy Rollings, landed estate, goods and etc. To Children: Nathan, Enoch, Polly, William, Ruthy (Shelton), John and Orpha (Lamb - husband is Marmaduke Lamb). Exec: Samuel Lotspeich. Will written: June 4, 1823. Wit: Samuel Kelly and G. Wells. Signed by David Rollings.

That David was born 1763 and married (2) Nancy Baker. See RFHA Mar 1991 p. 6.

Wow! Ruthy Shelton and Samuel Lotspeich tie directly into the Rutherford Co Rawlings.

iv. THOMAS B. RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1784 - 1794, Brunswick Co, VA.

Notes for THOMAS B. RAWLINGS:

RFHA Dec 1993 p. 52 has a Thomas Rawlings and wife Elizabeth E. Ball. He born 1784 in VA; she b. 1796 in VA. Children:

Sarah Martha

Armstead Mason m. Mildred Bakeer Dec 23, 1849

Subject: Re: Rawlings Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 22:28:00 EDT From: NagromD@aol.com To: rcb@cypress.com

My paternal granmother was Mary Jane Rawlings b. 7-29-1887 Independence Co., AR; d. 8-25-1955 Wills Point, Van Zandt Co, TX; m. James Fields Liston 12-1909 in TX. Mary Jane was the d/o Martha Elvira Ball and Thomas Richard Rawlings b. 6-7-1860 Independence Co., AR; d. 1-01-1943 Greenville, TX; s/o Mary L. Smithee(?) and John Ball Rawlings b. 1-28-1822 Loudoun Co., VA ; d. 3-2-1909 Independence Co, AR; s/o Elizabeth Ball and Thomas Rawlings b. 6-10-1784; d. 2-14-1840 Independence Co, AR.

Don't have any information on siblings or farther back than 1784. Also missing parents of spouses in most cases. However, have the Ball line going back from Martha Elvira Ball. Haven't found out for sure which Ball line Elizabeth Ball was from.

Appreciate any input. Thanks.

4. v. HENRY RAWLINGS, b. 1781, Brunswick Co, VA; d. Bet. September 29, 1849 - February 1857, Halifax Co., NC.

vi. HARTWELL RAWLINGS, b. 1797, Brunswick Co, VA; d. July 28, 1859, Fayette Co., TN; m. JULIA GILLIAN WILKES, March 27, 1820, Brunswick Co, VA.

Notes for HARTWELL RAWLINGS:

RFHA Dec 1996, p.54. This family migrated from Brunswick Co., VA to Fayette Co., TN by 1840.

vii. GEORGE C. RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1800 - 1810.

3. HENRY2 RAWLINGS (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1744 in Brunswick Co, VA, and died 1807 in Hancock Co., GA. He married (2) SARAH DUGGAR January 24, 1785 in Brunswick Co., VA2.

Notes for HENRY RAWLINGS:

It looks to me that Howell and Henry may be related - perhaps cousins since they are likely about the same age.

APR

Pg 287, Miles s. of Howell Rawlings and w. Susanna; b. Feb 3; c. Apr 9, 1775; godpts. Henry Rawlings, Chas Mabry, Patty Mabry.

Pg 254. Littleberry s. of Howell Rawlings and w. Susanna; b. Feb 6; c. April 10, 1774; godpts. John Hutchins, Ephraim Hutchins, Susanna Rawlings.

Susanna (godpt) may be Jesse Rawlings wife but Howell is too young to be a son of Jesse. Howell just doesn't see to fit with anyone.

Note also that this Henry Rawlings in Brunswick Co. had a Littleberry Rawlings betw 1884-1894.

Charles,

I added some info on your list below that came from the Rawlings Family

History Association Newsletter June 1993. There is more in the following

issues in 1993 as well. Hope this helps!

I am working the other end i.e. trying to follow the Rawlings into Brunswick

Co in the early 1700's. There is a William Rawlings there in 1750

(c1722-1787) who I suspect came from my Surry Co Rawlings because he appears

with Sampson Lanier who also appeared with my Surry Co Rawlings in Surry Co

VA. He has been thought to be the son of Wm Rawlings who died in 1737 in

Surry who was himself the son of Gregory Rawlings (1685-1755) (md Hannah

Knott) who was the son of John Rawlings (1655-1702) son of John Rawlings

(1617-1674) son of Gregory Rawlings (1595-1653).

William (1722-1787) supposedly (not proven) had a son Henry (1744-1807/9) who

md (2nd marriage) Sarah Duggar in Brunswick Co in 1785. Then Henry had a son

Benjamin (1770-1853) also not proven who md Miner/Minah Wilkes in 1799 also

in Brunswick Co.

Children of HENRY RAWLINGS are:

5. i. RANDOLPH3 RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1765, Brunswick Co, VA.

ii. SARAH RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1775, Brunswick Co, VA; d. Bef. 1807; m. WILLIAM FIRTH3, March 24, 1796, Brunswick Co, VA4.

Notes for SARAH RAWLINGS:

RFHA Jun 1997, p.27. Brunswick Co Marriages, Mar 23, 1796, Sally Rawlings md Wm. Firth.

Notes for WILLIAM FIRTH:

Very likely he is the brother of Elizabeth Firth who md Randle Rawlings, Sally's brother.

6. iii. BENJAMIN RAWLINGS, b. Abt. 1775, Brunswick Co, VA; d. 1854.

Children of HENRY RAWLINGS and SARAH DUGGAR are:

Notes for DANIEL RAWLINGS:

On the Brunswick Co VA 1810 Census.

Notes for CLARISSA ANN BARNES:

This is confusing. RFHA Jun 1997 p.26, Brunswick Co., VA marriages lists: Danny Rawlings md Mary Barnes, Feb. 14, 1807 and Daniel md Clarissa Ann Banes Sep 13, 1807. Could Clarissa Ann have died so quickly and Daniel md her sister, or are there two Daniels, or is one of these mistaken?

v. LITTLEBERRY RAWLINGS, b. Bet. 1784 - 1789, Brunswick Co, VA; m. FANNY DUGGAR, October 10, 1803, Brunswick Co, VA5.

Notes for LITTLEBERRY RAWLINGS:

4. HENRY3 RAWLINGS (REESE2, WILLIAM1) was born 1781 in Brunswick Co, VA, and died Bet. September 29, 1849 - February 1857 in Halifax Co., NC6. He married PRISCILLA MOODY February 18, 1817 in Brunswick Co., VA7.

Notes for HENRY RAWLINGS:

Halifax Co., NC Wills, Feb Term 1857, Will of Henry Rollins. To daughter Mary Jolly, wife of Asa Jolly, bed etc. To son Jess Rollins one dollar and forgiveness of debts. To wife Priscilla, remainder of estate and to support "my two youngest children, Rebecca and George W. Wife is Exec. Wit: W.W. Dancil Jr., A.A.B. Southall. Signed, Henry Rollins.

Didn't write down the souce of the other children, but think it is RFHA before Sep 1989. Probably from Lois Howell. Why weren't Pauline, Thomas, and Tabitha mentioned in the will?

The RFHA June 1990 p. 16 has the will and says that Priscilla is Priscilla Blount (?) and this also is from Lois Howell. This was corrected ( to Moody) in Sep 1990 issue p. 9.

Children of HENRY RAWLINGS and PRISCILLA MOODY are:
