DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

It wasn't pretty, but the Butler Bulldogs won their final pre-conference game 72-56 over the Lipscomb Bisons. Things started well, with a 10-0 run putting the Dawgs up early, but Lipscomb bounced back. Butler responded again by pulling out to a 15 point lead at halftime. The Dawgs came out flat in the second half, and let all but 4 points of that lead evaporate, thanks in large part to a 12-1 run by Lipscomb. Then the Darnell Archey show began. Archey, who had 10 points at halftime, hit 3 straight 3-pointers in the second half to put the game away. After that, the Bisons never seriously challenged Butler.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Archey. Darnell had a career high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting (5-of-6 from downtown). He even pulled down 4 rebounds, also a new career high. The spark he provided off the bench made the difference in this game.

Brandon Miller finished with 14 points, and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. LaVall Jordan added 12 points and 4 rebounds. Rylan Hainje had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals before fouling out. Thomas Jackson was solid once again, finishing with 8 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds. TJ also picked up a technical foul for voicing his displeasure over a foul call against him. Coach Thad Matta always jokes that Thomas hasn't said 5 words since he's been at Butler, so you know he had to have been more than a little upset to pick up a T. Lipscomb was led by Lorenzo Withrite, a first team NAIA All-American last season, with 14 points.

Matta pointed out the play of Archey and Jackson as positives, but wasn't pleased with his team's overall lethargic play. He said that when things don't go your way at one end of the floor, he stresses that you go make up for it at the other end. Last night, he saw a lot of head-hanging and frustration when the going got tough, and he said that needs to change. Some other stats of note: after shooting 57% in the first half, the Bulldogs cooled off to 36% after intermission. Lipscomb, on the other hand, went from 33% in the first half to 43% in the second. Butler shot well from the free throw line for the second straight game, finishing 20-of-25 (80%). The guards were a combined 16-for-17 (94%).

Butler begins its Midwestern Collegiate Conference schedule this Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Dayton, OH, to face the Wright State Raiders. WSU is currently 1-0 in the conference, and will be looking to avenge a 79-55 pasting on their home floor last season. Game time is Saturday, January 6, at 7 pm. Hope to see you there.
