DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Wright State used fast starts at the beginning of each half to snap a 6-game losing streak against Butler, winning 62-61. The Raiders came out smoking from the opening tip, jumping out to a 13-0 lead. Most of the fireworks were provided by Vernard Hollins, who used his height advantage and aggresiveness to score 10 points during the run. Butler answered with a 10-0 run of its own, and eventually clawed its way out to a 34-30 advantage at halftime. It was deja vu all over again in the second half, with the Raiders jumping out to a 10-point lead thanks to a 14-0 run. The Bulldogs once again fought back, regaining the lead 53-51 on a banked 3-pointer by Rylan Hainje that beat the shot clock. The game was back and forth from there on out. Hainje hit one of two free throws to give the Bulldogs a 61-60 lead with 30 seconds to go, but Kevin Melson hit a baseline jumper with 1.3 on the clock. Butler's Hail Mary inbounds pass didn't find the right hands, and the game was over.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jackson and Hainje share the honors in my book. TJ finished with 20 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and a 2-inch gash above his eye from an inadvertant elbow by Hainje. Hainje had 20 points and 7 rebounds, and his intensity helped key the Bulldogs' 2 comebacks.

Brandon Miller scored 10 points, and Joel Cornette added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Our bench didn't score a point or pull down a rebound in a combined 25 minutes. Hollins led Wright State with 19 points, 16 in the first half.

It's a tough way to start conference play, but it was obvious that this game meant a lot to the Raiders from the start. Their fans poured on to the floor when it was over, much like it was a conference tournament championship. I fully expect the Bulldogs to match that intensity when Wright State comes to Hinkle next month. We just came out flat to start both halves, and didn't have quite enough left at the end to get the win. People will point to Hainje's free throw miss, but he was 6-of-6 at that point, and if he is 6-for-7 in every game from here out, I'll take it. The problem was that his free throw was the only point we scored in the final two and a half minutes. Take out Rylan's 4-of-5 performance, and the rest of the team was 1-for-6 from the line in the second half. Rylan certainly wasn't to blame for this loss.

The next 2 MCC games are at home, so hopefully the Bulldogs can bounce back. First up is Cleveland State on Thursday, January 11, at 8:30 pm. The game with also be televised on Fox Sports Midwest. Hope to see you there.
