1. INTRODUCTION

From Beatrice  to Claudine is designed to supplement the Storm of Steel set,  the epic battle of Dien Bien Phu  between the French  & their allies vs. the Viet Minh in 1954. A battle of  epic proportions. I've currently read no less than  5 accounts. The 2nd edition will be completed after I read the classic account  Hell in a Small Place

2. SPECIAL RULES

A. Skill Levels.  The CEFEO was a who's who in martial races and famous units; Senegalese, North Africans, etc. and of course the Foreign Legion was sprinkled with German WWII vets. Thus I feel that the proficiency level of the French should be Elite and roles a 1d10 for Cpts.  Viet Minh armies are Regular.

B. Fortifications. The VM Player may not deploy Dragons Teeth or Mines. (The  fortifications they held were indefinitely captured from the French.) Bunkers.  A suppressed unit in a bunker that are hit again by fire, are not destroyed. The bunker is, if hit again they do become destroyed. This is to reflect the inferior quality of the bunkers at DPB.

C. French Paradrops.  Plot a paradrop like a Air strike, using a BIP anywhere on the board, except in woods, forests or bush. If landing in one of these areas the unit must make a morale test. If it fails the unit become pinned for three turns. Now take a 1d12 and label the North of BIP as 12. Then roll the 1d12 followed by 1d10 cm. That is the location of the unit after the paradrop. Example: a 6 is rolled on the 1d12 meaning this Vietnamese Parachute platoon has drooped due south of the position. Then a 1d10 is rolled giving the number 1cm. This platoon is lucky and has drooped realitively close to the BIP.

D. Tanks. The M24 Chafee was the only piece of armor at Dien Bien Phu primarily because; it was the only tank that could fit aboard the French aircraft. A squadron was also the only intact unit to fight it's way out of the siege. They were often placed in a hull down position and used as pill-boxes. They also spearheaded French counterattacks.

E. Support. The French  Players support deck contains 4 x "One air strike", 4 x "One artillery bombardment"
and 2 x "No support this turn". The VM Players support deck contains  7 x "One artillery bombardment" and 3 x "No support this turn". The VM artillery is classified as Rigid, with a Normal Volume of Fire, French artillery is classified as Rigid, with a Low Volume. (They wasted a lot in fruitless counter-battery fire) For the final half of the siege The 4x "One air strike" all become "no support this turn". The French air support is always level or light bombers.

F. Force Composition. At least 3/4 thus of the VM must be infantry. 1/2 the French  forces must be like this  as well.

G. Sapper Combat Arm. The VM can employ sappers. Once per game Sappers have the ability to destroy a bunker they are in base contact in during the Assault attack phase. In Close assaults with infantry the VM  break ties. They can close assault AFVs at whenever they want. However, they only use a 1d4 in fire combat.

3. NEW RANDOM EVENTS CARDS

The following Random Events cards are added to the Standard Random Events Deck. Note that the procedure for preparing and using this deck is still the same.

2x Heavy Rains and Remove 1x Change in Weather

1x Rains collapse one fortification on your side.

1x or 2x Conserve Ammo
The Player's units skip his next "Fire phase" Put; one of these cards in the deck for the first half of the siege and two for the final phase.

1 x Chinese FLAK fire
Chinese AA guns in the hills pour fire into the  sky over the battlefield. The next time a French air strike-card is drawn, it is treated as a no support-card.

1x The Paratrooper Mafia
Castries goes a little crazy, but; his position is saved by some Airborne officers who began to effectively run the battle. The player gets an extra 1d2 cpts this turn.
