Conscientious Objection is NOT an Easy or a Quick Way Out of the Military. If you sincerely object to war in any form, then you should apply. As you apply, let these be your watchwords--Be Informed, Be Determined, and Be Careful. |

Know the steps of the application process inside and out. Initially, your Chain of Command may know nothing about this process. You must know everything, ask them nothing, and teach them nothing (that is not your place). Read everything written on CO status--including all relevant regulations, non-profit organization supporting materials, Supreme Court cases, and other people's applications. Finally, know your own moral, ethical, and/or religious beliefs and objectives. |
Know yourself well, decide your ultimate goal, and accept nothing less. Practice articulating your beliefs--Express 2-3 solid views only, Concisely define when you came to your current objection to war in any form, and Plan for your future. Always reinforce this prepared message. Never express doubts or weaker views you may have--it detracts from your message. Be determined to endure isolation and criticism gracefully. Draw great personal strength from your commitment to your conscience. Work within the confines of your convictions. |
Your decision to apply for classification as a Conscientious Objector flies in the face of those with whom you serve and all that they believe. Do not hope to be understood. Respect them and the decision to serve in the military, do not challenge them. People may be intimidated, infuriated by or suspicious of your decision. Even people who support you initially may later withdraw support. Be prepared. Be discreet. Safeguard all CO-related paperwork and maintain a low profile. From the beginning, log all official and unofficial actions and comments relating to your request. |
