Scene I - Firehouse The clock is chiming a new year throughout Springfield.
Jenna: You are out of your mind, out of your mind, if you think I'm letting you anywhere near this child!
Roger: [sitting on the couch] You'd rather fight me in court for as long as it takes?
Jenna: This is totally irrelevant, totally irrelevant. You're not going to have a leg to stand on, especially a legal a battle when you're sitting in prison?
Roger: If you're referring to those fraud and contempt of court charges that I'm hanging with, there isn't a lawyer in this country not smart enough to find a way around that. I'm going to be in your face for the rest of your life, so get used to it. Make it easy on yourself. [gets up in pain] Jenna, as I sit in what used to be your bedroom, you lose, baby.
Jenna: [grabs gun out of drawer and aims it at him] No, I don't believe I do.
Scene II - Jenna is aiming the gun at Roger.
Jenna: Why don't you go back to hell where you came from?
Roger: [backing away] Don't be unpleasant. Just give me cusody of the child.
Jenna: Get out, or I'll kill you.
Roger: No, you won't shoot me, Jenna, you loved me once.
Jenna: No, no. I loved the stories you had me believing in. But, no, there isn't a trace of love left in me. That bullet inside your chest should prove that.
Roger: [smiles] No, you didn't shoot me. I don't believe that for a minute.
Jenna: Why not? Getting rid of you would've been the answer to all my prayers.
Roger: Listen, if you wanted me dead, you would've pulled the trigger by now. [Jenna pulls the trigger and it clicks] Oh, my God, you are the one who shot me.
Scene III - Jenna is still aiming the gun at Roger.
Jenna: It's not loaded--or then again, is it? What do you think, Roger? Maybe it was just that chamber that was empty. Shall we find out? Shall we? [drops the gun on the table] Why don't you go away? [starts to cry] Would you please just go away? [sits down at the dinner table]
Roger: I'll tell you what. Give me the baby, and I won't turn you into the police.
Jenna: I don't really care what you do, because this is my baby. I wanted this child in order to keep you, and then I didn't want this child because of you. But now I realize it has nothing to do with you, dead or alive. This is my child. This is something that belongs to me like nothing has ever belonged to me in my entire life. I grew up is a second hand world, other people's clothes, anything my mother could steal, food. I never wanted for anything. I did pretty good, learned well. Learned so well, that as I was an adult, I collected things that were beautiful that I wished so much belonged to me, and kept one step ahead of the people that they rightfully belonged to. And I thought I discovered my birthright because of you, Spaulding Enterprises, but that turned out to be stolen, too! [throws her chair down] And that was a setback. And then there was another setback, and then there were a lot of disappointments along the way. [puts her hands on her stomache] But this was a miracle. This is a miracle. This is not stolen. This is not fake. This is new and true and mine, and no one is going to take it away from me.
Roger: Jenna, I had no idea. I'd consider some form of joint custody.
Jenna: [smiles] Would you?
Roger: Of course I would have to take into account the moral influence that you and your Fifth Street companion present.
Jenna: Oh, that's very rich, coming from you, your moral influence. [puts her fingers to her lips] Do you know that for the past month there have been champagne corks popping all over town in celebration of the hope that perhaps you were dead? That's how much your moral influence has affected this town. But more than that, much more than that, is your delusion that I'm going to give up my baby to you. [whispering] You will never touch it. You will never see it. You will never hear it call "daddy." I have seen what you've done with your fatherly advice, to your daughter and your son, and that will never happen to a child of mine. I won't allow it. [cries]
Roger: I don't think you understand. I'm not begging for my child, see, you already cost me my son. I'll be damned if you take another--
Jenna: [points her finger at him] No, don't you blame me for that. I had nothing to do with that. That was your fault. You did that!
Roger: YOU LIAR ! You really think the lie wouldn't catch up with you? See, I figured it out, Jenna. You made the whole damn thing up because you couldn't stand to see how much I loved him. And I believed you over my own boy, because I couldn't imagine that you would manufacture something so vicious, so hurtful to me. But, see, what goes around comes around, because now there's not a way in this world that I will let you have this child. This baby is mine.
Scene IV - Roger is circling Jenna like a vulture.
Roger: What kind of mother would you be? What kind of mother could you be? You're a little more than a child yourself. Being taken care of is all you know.
Jenna: I would be a good mother. I would provide for my child.
Roger: Provide? Provide how?
Jenna: I'd work.
Roger: Oh, work? As in job?
Jenna: Yes, yes, I would take care of my baby.
Roger: You never held a job in your life. What could you do? You have no skill. You have no talent. Who'd hire you?
Jenna: It's really none of your concern, is it?
Roger: On the contrary.
Jenna: I would manage.
Roger: Let's look at this the way a court of law would, alright? What are your qualifications for motherhood, or anything else for that matter? You're nothing. You come from nothing.
Jenna: You filth.
Roger: I've tried to give you a less ignominious past, but you wouldn't accept that.
Jenna: You're vile.
Roger: So you're blithely, happily following in your parent's footsteps, another chippy off the old block.
Jenna: [whispering] You're filthy. Shut up.
Roger: The only two things I can think of that you ever succeeded at in your life are larceny and fraud.
Jenna: [yelling] Shut up!
Buzz is outside the firehouse listening in.
Roger: I'm trying to point out the way a court of law is going to perceive you--
Jenna: [whispering] Shut up.
Roger: As a loser and a deadbeat. As a petty little cheating thief who by your own admission tried to kill me. So, there's not a court in this land who would ever let you near raising a child--
Jenna: Shut up.
Roger: The baby is mine!
Jenna: [yelling] Shut up!
Buzz comes through the door, takes Roger by his jacket, and slams him against the wall.
Roger: [in pain] God!
Jenna starts having pains, grabs her stomache, and drops to the floor.
Scene V - Buzz has Roger, leaned over, pinned on the back of the couch.
Roger: Hey, what are you doing?
Buzz: You're not going to get very far this time on foot. [punches Roger in the back]
Roger: AH!
Buzz: It's going to be alright, Jenna. I'm going to call the cops.
Jenna: [still on the floor and her head resting on the couch; crying] Don't let this happen. Don't let me lose this child, please, please. Don't let me lose my baby.
Buzz: [hand on her head] Jenna?
Jenna: [crying] Don't let me lose my baby, please. Please, don't--
Buzz: Call a doctor. [goes to the phone]
Jenna has more pains and tears stream down her face.
Scene VI - Buzz is on the phone with the police. Roger touches Jenna, who is lying on the couch in pain.
Buzz: That's right, 55 Elm Street.
Roger: Listen, I won't tell anyone what you did to me. I promise you. It's all right. It's going to be all right.
Buzz: [hangs up the phone and rushes to Jenna] Jenna, you're going to be all right. The ambulance is on it's way.
Roger: Why is she in such pain?
Buzz: [runs to him] You're going to make it worse. Get the hell out.
Roger: [points gun at Buzz] Hey, I'm not leaving here. [Buzz goes to the phone] Who are you calling?
Buzz: 911. Hello, Roger Thorpe. Tell the police he's alive and he's here. The firehouse on Elm Street. [Jenna's pain increases] God.
Roger: How long did they say the ambulance would take?
Buzz: You just don't get it, do you? You did this to her. If you want your child to live, walk out of here.
Roger: You'll stay with her? You'll make sure she gets specialists, whatever.
Buzz: Whatever she needs. [Jenna grabs Buzz's arm]
Roger: I'll pay for it. She can't lose the baby.
Roger hears the sirens and goes out the back way. Buzz rests his hand on Jenna's shoulder.
Scene VII - Buzz is holding Jenna's hand and kissing it.
Jenna: [calmly] What's happening to me, Buzz?
Buzz: You're going to be okay.
Jenna: You keep saying that. But how do you know? [cries]
Buzz: In the Phillipines, I saw a girl go through the same thing. I was with her all the way, every minute. I saw the pain come, I saw the pain go. Your pain will go.
Jenna: Did she--did--did the baby die?
Buzz: [emotionally] She had a beautiful baby girl.
Jenna cries and Buzz strokes her head gently. The paramedics come in.
Buzz: Over here. [Buzz got up and let the paramedics check her]
Policeman: Are you the one who called about Roger Thorpe?
Buzz: Yeah.
Policeman: Which way did he go?
Buzz: Huh? I don't know. [looks back at Jenna and watches]
The policeman goes out the door and runs into Frank, Nadine, and Eleni.
Nadine: What's going on?
Frank: We saw the ambulance pull up.
Policeman: Sorry, nobody's allowed.
Nadine: My daughter lives here. I have to know what's going on in there.
Policeman: Your daughter, huh? I'm afraid there's some trouble with her baby.
Frank: What are you talking about?
They enter the firehouse and see the paramedic tending to Jenna. Nadine looks at Buzz, who is biting his thumb and has worry in his eyes.
