The Prison Picnic

2/97

Buzz enters the cell room with a card board box. Jenna is sitting on the bed.

Buzz: Hey, beware of diner owners bearing gifts. Come here. Look at this stuff. This is incredible.

Jenna: Oh, Buzz. [gets up and walks to the bars] You really didn't need to do this. [puts her right hand on her hip]

Buzz: Come on. You think I could let you starve to death on prison rations? Come on. Look at you. You're skin and bones. You need some meat on there. You're getting too thin.

Jenna: [laughing] It's just that I won't have time to eat it. I'm going to be out of here.

Buzz: Good. Get the--[points to the bed] Get the blanket off of there. Can you hand me the blanket?

Jenna: The blanket?

Buzz: The blanket. Bring me the blanket. [Jenna grabs it off the bed] Can you give it to me? [she hands it to him] So Jeffrey showed up?

Jenna: Well, no. No, not yet. But I gave Frank a couple of numbers where I know that he can be reached.

Buzz: Oh, you did, did you?

Jenna: Yeah, and I'm sure that he'll wire me the bail money and all the attourneys that I'll need. So...I'm sure that, uh, you have a diner full of costumers that need you.

Buzz: So you--you think my costumers need me more than you need me. Here. [kneels down] We're going to have a little picnic here. [spreads out the blanket]

Jenna: [sighs] Buzz, I'll be fine.

Buzz: [still spreading out the blanket] Sit down. Sit down. Come on.

Jenna adjusts the blanket and sits down.

Jenna: Don't you have better things to do than sit on prison floors and have picnics? [hands her a styrfoam container through the bars] Why don't you get on with the rest of your life? [hands her a clear container through the bars]

Buzz: Well, let's see, I lost my wife, two daughters amd a son-in-law That's why. [hands her another container through the bars]

Jenna: [taking the container] Lucy?

Buzz: Yeah.

Jenna: Oh, Buzz, I'm very sorry. I really am.

Buzz: You know, I don't know what I'm going to do without her. That girl, she picked me up and put me back together again for 23 years. She was a strong one, you know? Even when she was a kid, she was a strong one.

Jenna: [smiles] You should give yourself more credit. You're pretty tough, too.

Buzz: [looks at her and grins] Oh, yeah? You still say that after so long a time?

Jenna: [looks at him and smiles] Yeah, after so long a time.

Buzz: You know, something has gotten through my thick head is that good people in life you got to appreciate while they're still there. Don't let them slip through your fingers, at least not till you tell them how much you love them. [Jenna smiles and looks at him adoringly]

Jenna: [nods] You should do that.

Buzz: Yeah. So, I'm going to stay here till I'm sure you're alright.

Jenna looks at Buzz and smiles emotionally.

Jenna: [smiling; happily] Hey, you didn't forget how I like my omlet. [laughs]

Buzz: Well, you know, I have forgotten a lot of things these past couple of years, but somehow, I never forgot your likes and dislikes.

Jenna: [takes a bite] Mmm.

She looks up and Buzz and he takes a napkin and gently wipes the corner of her mouth. He hands her the salt and pepper. They both look into each other's eyes and sink into a deep trance. Franks walks in and Jenna gets up rather quickly.

Jenna: Frank, have you heard from Jeffrey?

Buzz looks up at Jenna.
