On May 2001 I broke my back while in the Ellis Co. Jail. I have had to catherize myself since then and my bowles don't move on there own.
I finally saw an orthopedic doctor for my back injury here in T.D.C.in January 2002.I have been complaining and seeing medical in T.D.C. since August 2001.I know as far back as Oct 2001 when I was experiencing symptoms similar to a heart attack doctors referred me to a neurologist because after x-rays they believed it was related to my spine not my heart.
Jan 2001 I saw the orthopedic doctor and he did x-rays and scheduled me for a mylogram in 4 weeks. I went back to U.T.M.B. in 4 weeks but was given an ultrasound instead.Upon getting into the wheelchair afterwards I looked up at the computer screen and the name on it was Tyrone Davis..my name is Janet Davis. There was a little confusion but I was sent back to hold over cell and then back to my unit with no explanation as to what was going on or when I would get the mylogram.
In March 2002 I went back to John Sealy at U.T.M.B.I was admitted on the 8th that night.I was taken to see a nurse who asked why I was there and what allergies I had.At this time I told her I was allergic to the Iodine dye used for x-rays.At no time before I got to the procedure room did anyone explain what would be done.I was told the 1st night not to eat or drink anything after midnight.I went 26 hrs without food and water or being told my test had been cancelled.I asked the nurse at 6pm when I asked for food what happened and was rudely told "I was lucky I got to eat "and i response to why no one bothered to tell me it was cancelled she said,"they were to busy to be running back and forth to tell us things, be happy I ate." I cried most of the night. The night before I was unable to sleep because I was anxious about not knowing what was going to happen.I was told on day #2 not to eat or drink after midnight,I got down to the room you are prepped for test and after numerous attempts to start an I.V. I again reminded them I was allergic to the Iodine dye.The I.V.The I.V. was pulled out ,no one knew about my allergy despite my having reported it.I had not been pre-medicated for my asthma or the dye allergy so again I was sent back to the holding cell.I was not given a red band stating my dye allergy until next morning only after repeatedly complaining about it,The entire 3 days on the 8th floor the nursing staff was un-cooperative or rude about my medical needs of a catheter I have to use and questions regarding my care.
The 3rd day the procedure of the mylogram was done. That part went smooth. Both before and after the procedure was repeatedly told that as soon as I got to the 6th floor I was to start drinking as much caffeine as possible, coke, coffee just lots of caffeine. It would open the blood vessels in my brain and decrease the possibility of a bad reaction to the procedure,I was told I was it was on my chart but to ask when I got back upstairs because this was important.I was admitted to room 52 on 6th floor.A nurse came in to fill out some paperwork.Ms Sauer.I was a little drowsy from some meds I had been given for pain and when she asked me 2 questions on medical terms I did not understand she became verbally abusive and I was crying before she left the room.I asked the 2 .D.C. guards outside my room if they would get my nurse,I had no call button as someone had pulled it out of the wall. They asked what I wanted.I tried to explain I needed something with caffeine in it because the doctor downstairs had told me to. I was accused by the guards of trying to get a snack and told that I didn't need anything.I asked them to please get my nurse as I could not get up.I had to lie flat for 24hrs.No exceptions. Two hours later I needed to be catherized but no nurse ever came in except for my encounter with Ms. Sauer earlier whom I had told at the time I need to be cathaterized.I tried to get the guards attention but they just laughed and walked off. When they came into count us I asked If the nurse had been called and was told No....not for what you wanted. I asked for Rank officer please, and was told it was count time.I asked after count time if I could talk to Rank officer but wasn't allowed to.
When Ms Fontenot came in later for vitals,I begged her to get me a catheter and told her I had asked her hours ago for a nurse. The guard rudely told me she was not a nurse(Fontenot) the aide came in to catherize me with another co-worker.She put the catheter so far into me it hurt.I told her it was in the wrong place, she pulled it out and told the other girl to go get a new one.I thought she was just looking to find the right place but she put this contaminated catheter into my urethra.I had waited so long because no one would call a nurse I voided 1100cc.I was miserable before I was finally allowed to void.Later blood work was ordered Ms Fontenot attempted it.I was stuck 6 times,,she hit nerves and blew every vein before she gave up.I do not believe this lady is trained to do the jobs she is attempting.Ms Hall came in the next and got it immediately.
The next day I saw the doctor. He told me they had discovered lesions in my spinal cord with possibly a cyst or something growing in it.. which is why I can't use the bathroom,He ordered 5 fleet enemas to be given to me then.I got 1,then another, both times telling the male orderly giving them to me that nothing was coming back.I was hurting. He told me it didn't matter if I went to the bathroom or not,he was on to my scheme and I wasn't staying.I asked him why he was saying that to me.He just left. When he came back in he was mad because my doctor ordered blood drawn before I was released. He didn't know why it had to be done before I left.He stuck me twice in both arms, both knotted up.Then he put my feet on the side of the bed and put the tourniquet on so tight I had bruses on my legs for 4 days.He stuck me and left the butterfly needle hanging out of my foot, while he left the room and looked for more needles. The pain was so bad I would cry out as he repeatedly dug around for a vein.Twice a nurse came in and quickly turned around and left. There was a sheet on the floor to catch the blood dripping off my feet from the sticks. He actually sat on the floor and cried because he couldn't get the blood. I was terrified. The guard came in after he finally succeeded and said."He's thrown off that way!" The tubes of blood he had just drawn were left on my food tray. I told the guard and he went up to the desk. He came back and said,"He's kicked back up there,I guess he forgot." the guard took the tubes of blood. Later the orderly came in and said he wanted me to take the last 3 enemas before I left.I told him I couldn't do that and get on the bus,so he left mad.
I was then released, but the doctor wanted an MRI done on my lower spine and one on my left arm before I left.He told me I would talk to a nureosurgeon before I left, who would expain to me my condition.I was really scared. I went to MRI.I was told by MRI supervisor and the guard MR.Pettiway I was not going to be released after all because they needed more tests.Mr, Pettiway took me back to the 6th floor and told them I was to stay. Both the nurse and guards were mad then. They looked at me and said You've been released, you are not staying up here,we are not doing the paperwork to keep you in patient.I was treated like I caused some problem.I was put back in my room, dressed in a gown and fed.At 6:30 then guard Ms,Compton came in with an attitude and the Sgt was at the door. She told me I needed to get dressed right now.The Sgt. repeated that and the fact that they weren't doing the paper work to re-admit me.I got up to do what they were telling me and Ms Compton yelled at me for comming to the door to get my clothes.I explained I had to dress in the restroom as there were men in the hallway. She acted mad and told me to hurry up as the bus was waiting for me and I was holding them up.I asked for a catheter before I left so I would have one on Goree unit over the weekend but was ignored. When I got downstairs I was upset and told them I needed a catheter to take with me.Nurse Reynolds brought one for me to use right then but refused to let me take it with me.They told me to get one at Goree unit. When I got to Goree unit I got one but no lubricant or anything to clean the area. There was no way to de-contaminate this catheter I used for a solid week as the cells there have only cold water and I was bleeding due to no lubricant.
I realize I am in prison,but I am a human being,Someones child,wife,mother,not just someone who make a mistake.
I was treated horribly.I am terrified of what might happen in my future trips to U.T.M.B. at the hands of these same people.I am sending copies of this letter to my family.to Huntsville,to patient liasons and Senator Armbruster, letting everyone know what I am being subjected to by T.D.C. and U.T.M.B. I am also relating to them my fear of future treatment because of this.
I requested to talk to internal affairs and any other dept. that can assist me to see I don't get treated like this or abused again.I want to know if these people drawing blood and crying on the floor are really trained and authorized by U.T.M.B. to do the the things they are being allowed to do.
Again I wish to express the terror I went through the 4 days I was at U.T.M.B. Things like this should never happen, not one should have to yet I experienced them over and over every day I was there.
On March 26,2002 I again went to John Sealy at U.T.M.B. I finally saw a neurosurgeon, the first since I broke my back in May 2001. I told him all the problems I was having in my back and arm.He looked at my arm which I can no longer move and had several other people look at it.He asked why the tests that were ordered by the orthopedic doctor the last time I was admitted were never done.I explained how they refused to re-admit me and sent me back to my unit against doctors orders. He left the room and I assumed it was to allow me to get dressed before talking to me again.however he actually left.I told guards I needed to speak to him but they told me he left and put me on the hold over to leave. After waiting a year to see a neurosurgeon thats all I got.
I know my spine has a compressed facture in the L1 area and I know there are several lesions in the T11 and T12 area which the orthopedic surgeon said would have to be addressed by a neurosurgeon as they were into the bone already.
April 1.2002
The pain in my left arm and neck and shoulder is unbearable.I went to unit medical sick call on the Gatesville reception unit at 7:30am this morning about it and also a bladder infection from having to use comtaminated catherter tubes.I sat in medical until 2:30 to see P.A. Baker. When I went in and tried to explain about my arm and being seen by the wrong doctor for it a week before at U.T.M.B. and told by the neurosergeon at John Sealy to let my unit Dr.West know the Motrin was not working on the pain.He said I was being treated in Galveston at U.T.M.B. and he couldn't treat me.This was the extent of my 7 hour wait.
I did not come to jail using a catheter or in this pain.I could use my arm and I still had some dignity.I have to catherize myself with a tube I get once a month.I have to try to clean it in the sink where people wash their dirty clothes and brush their teeth.I suffer unbelievable humilitation, at the hands of both inmates and especially the medical staff who are unprofessional in their actions and comments.
I would so much appreaciate any help.
Thank You for your time and consideration in helping me

First let me say I appreciate anything anyone can do to help me. I am becoming so depressed and frustrated,no one can imagine the things i have begun to consider doing. I had so much hope when patient Liaisons Ms. Kersh became interested in my case. I have today, once again lost all hope in obtaining even their help. I feel I got once again another major dose of official run-a-round. Her official response sent to me today, named dates, times etc...of appointments set up for me, which I was present for all, she stated some of my complaints were never found on 1-60's or sick calls here at the unit. She mentioned old X-rays taken 12-10-01 of my arm, none of the ones after 2-1-02. Nothing was mentioned concerning the findings of my MRI and X-rays or mylograms, and the fact, despite what was found, nothing was done. The tests and appointments I went for, but were cancelled by T.D.C. or U.T.M.B. She mentions pain medicine being prescribed, but not that as of today, P.A. Baker has decided to deny me further pain medication prescribed by Dr. Jake Battle in Galveston, without so much as glancing at why I was getting it. Where have all my 1-60's and sick calls gone? They claim never to have received?
I am in severe pain, literally trying to stay on my bunk and not move. Ok, so these tests were done, they know part of whats wrong and it is serious. I go do everything required, I get doctor orders and medicine from people, they themselves send me to, and as soon as I get back, the orders are changed, dosages cut in half, nothing followed through on.
Why am I being denied the medication ordered by doctors at John Sealy? Please put my letters out.I have many people here wanting you to hear their stories. Anything we can do to help each other we are willing to do.
I should get out within a year and very much wish to continue with tplu in anyway. Tell everyone thank you from me. I mean this from the bottom of my heart.
I am desperately praying you people will not turn your backs on us.
Sincerely,
Janie Davis #1053507
P.S. There is so much more to say, but as this is affecting my left arm, it is impossible to go on. I am left handed.
