I wonder if you have heard what happened at the meeting on Wednesday yet! I had an email from Phil Knight on Tuesday saying he had written to Nick D. and had had a reply which he sent me. It said much the same as I reported to you from the conversation Symon Harner had with him. So he had three letters by the time of the meeting. Whether anyone else wrote I don't know. I have just had an email from Pol Hodge who is a former KDL student and until recently was secretary of the Cornish Language Fellowship. His wife Jane, also a former KDL student is at present the chairman (or chair person??!!). It seems Pol has emailed a few of the people I emailed saying what a good fellow and excellent playwright Nick is and clearly supporting his point of view. However it seems he did not send the email till today so it will not have been received by anyone in time to stop them writing before the 7th if they had a mind to do so. Pol, who likes writing Cornish verse has written little poem about it. I won't translate it all for you These things always lose something in translation but he seems to think the seat on the cliff would be a prelude to ice cream and pasty stalls, public toilets locked to keep out vandals etc etc. you name it! His letter also includes a sentence which is a good illustration of how ambiguous Cornish can be if you don't take great care. It could mean either 'Nick was the man who proposed David to be a Bard, or the reverse. 'David was the man who proposed Nick to be a Bard. Well!! Looking at it again I've a strong suspicion, which I was trying to avoid, that he means the former. You have told me that it was David who proposed Nick and apart from this I know for a fact that David was made a Bard after passing the fourth grade exam with exceptionally high marks, not from a personal recommendation as do some bards who have nor qualified in the language, but I am copying this to Pol and those he sent his message to so they will get this right at least! In any case it has nothing whatsoever to do with putting the seat on the cliff top or anywhere else. He does say that Nick wants a bilingual plaque to be put up in the village to David's memory. It is not clear whether he means a plaque divorced from the seat or the actual seat. Any way, as I said, Pol's email will not have affected whatever decision was made on Wednesday and I am looking forward to hearing from you as to what happened and whether the campaign continues and in what form. I am willing to support you in whatever you decide in any way I can. Best wishes Ray Edwards |
