The Grasshopper

By Eunice Soper

Sometimes God uses peculiar and ordinary events to protect His children.

High on the top of the Royal Exchange Building in London is a weather vane in the shape of a grasshopper. There is an interesting story back of that weather vane. Hearken to it:

A big, lively specimen of a grasshopper was hopping across the countryside of England one warm afternoon. He was going in great leaps, for he was being relentlessly pursued by a small boy who was intent upon catching the lively fellow. Across the field they went, around weeds and over stones, with the 'hopper always at least one jump ahead of his would-be captor.

Finally, an unusually long leap brought the grasshopper up to the junction of two fences. The boy made one more grab, but the 'hopper went through the fence. The boy, however, stopped in his tracks, for right there on the ground before him was a tiny child.

The baby seemed to be delighted to see the boy, but was too young to talk and tell who he was and where he lived. Not knowing what else to do, the boy finally lugged the heavy child home to his own mother. Mother recognized the baby, and in a few moments had him back with his mother, who by now had missed the little runaway, and was frantically hunting for him.

When that baby grew up he became famous as Sir Thomas Gresham, a great man of finance. The Royal Exchange Building was built in his honor, and the grasshopper on top recalled this event in his life.

God has a way of using even grasshoppers to protect His children from danger. God used a curious small boy and a lively grasshopper to save from danger a child who did not know he was in danger. That baby was thus saved to a life of service to his country. God surely holds the hand of, and "keeps," those who need His help.

"I the Lord . . .
will hold thine hand, and will keep thee."
Isaiah 42:6.
