"THE BASKETBALL GAME

by Donald Smith

I really wish they hadn't called my name
To play in the company basketball game.
I'm bruised, battered, beaten and sore.
Will somebody help me up off the floor?

I ran down the court once or twice,
But both my knees soon screamed for ice.
Then someone smacked me on my head --
To tell the truth, I thought I was dead.

I believed I was healthy and able to run,
But I soon found out they weren't playing for fun.
Those guys were serious...they had come to play,
So I got in one's face and said, "Make my Day!"

Well I'm not as young as I used to be,
'Cause the other team made a mess of me.
I begged the coach to please take me out
Account of arthritis, bursitis and gout.

Next year if our team is short a man,
Find someone else if you possibly can.
You younger guys can run and gun,
But I'll be soaking up Florida sun.
