"THE BONUS"

by Donald Smith

The roof is leakin' and my car's gettin' old
And all my bills are past due.
The baby's got a fever and my wife's got a cold,
And I'm comin' down with the flu.

My shirt's worn out and so's my hat.
There are holes in the bottom of my shoes.
There's no more food for the dog and the cat,
But last month I got some good news.

I got me a bonus. Now ain't that dandy?
And the wolf's gone away from my door.
That bonus check sure came in handy,
"Cause now I don't feel so poor.

I fixed the roof and my old car
And paid off most of my bills.
That bonus check only went so far,
So I couldn't buy any flu pills.

I've still got the doctor and my rent to pay
But I've got nothin' to fear.
I'm gonna work safe on my job each day,
And get another bonus next year.
