"First Clone" by Jennifer Ley

Would he'd started with clay
when he made me
a handful of honest dirt
not this ragged piece
of bone that's never knitted
into place

When the rains come,
and come they do, drops
feeding rills, then torrents
what an ache builds in my breast
the song of 'you'
sullen with wanting
and blame

In the damp nights
I dream of apples
their crisp, clear taste
hoping to wake with one
perfect seed on my tongue
the genesis
for a new garden

Note: "First Clone" will appear in Caron Andregg's 1999 Poetry Calendar

Over two years ago, Jennifer Ley created a unique thematic poetry site, THE ASTROPHYSICIST'S TANGO PARTNER SPEAKS, to showcase poets of unusual vision. Last summer, Astro sponsored a live poetry reading, "Flesh Time," which brought together in Greenwich Village poets from as far away as Germany. The event, earning a critic's pick in "Time Out," is commemorated in a specially prepared print anthology.

Jennifer Ley has created a number of chapbooks including, hardcopy, Riding the Meridian, Anthology of the Web and A Chapbook of Poems and, on-line, Ambient Alchemy. Print credits include Minotaur, Mobius, Perceptions & Salonika, and anthology appearances in Excursus, Gravity and The Poetry Calendar. Among her many creative activities, she has designed and is editor/moderator for PERIHELION, a new interactive WebDelSol publication.
