"ROAD MAPS"

by Donald Smith

I opened a Virginia Road map
To see all the places I'd been
But I got in a mess of trouble
When I tried to refold it again.

The creases were all turned inside out
And as far as I could see
The front of the map was not on the back
And Danville had moved to D.C.

Pulaski was in Virginia Beach
Winchester was in Boones Mill
Waynesboro was now in Big Stone Gap
And Richmond in Martinsville.

I didn't get that map back together
And I don't think I ever will
So if you come to see me in Roanoke
You might find me in Charlottesville.
