NOTE ON THE TERM 'CULT'
The term 'cult' here means any religious group that is far removed from religious views of the cultural norms of society, or from the mainstream religions they have aligned themselves with. It is meant here in the academic sense.
Beginning in 1987, an African from Zimbabwe purported to be Sun Myung Moon's deceased son Heung Jin Moon returned from the dead, was sent on tour to the members worldwide, where he reportedly beat them severely after making them confess sins to him. Several victims were rushed to hospitals and even leaders were not exempt from the abuses. Bo Hi Pak, Moon's long time trusted aid and translator, and formerly head of Moon's Washington Times newspaper suffered permanent brain damage as a result of his beating.
