She opened her mouth to him, allowing his tongue entry. His hand found its way under her shirt and the only thing she could think of was Spike.

“BUFFY! There’s trouble!” Willow barged in, just in the knick of time.

      “What?”

“We were in the Rec room when this demon crashed through the window.”

      “Vampire?” Riley asked.

“Vampires don’t breathe fire.” Willow said. Buffy was relieved; she’d have to thank Willow for stopping a mistake.

------------------------------

“You own nothing. This shouldn’t be taking so long.” Xander said obviously annoyed.

“Hang on. Let a fella get organized.” He grabbed the radio.

      “That’s my radio!”

“And you’re what? Shocked and disappointed? I’m evil!”

“So, what kind of place are you looking for?” Anya asked. He liked her; she was evil, without being evil.

“I don’t know. Maybe a crypt. Some place, you know, dark and dank. But not as dark and dank as this.” He looked around.

“Heh. It’s pretty depressing, isn’t it?”

“I’ve known corpses with a fresher smell. In fact, I’ve been one.”

“That’s it! Let’s go!” Xander pleaded.

“Wait. I want to give you something for your new place.” Anya grabbed a lamp and brought it over to him.

“That’s my lamp.” Xander took it away from her.

“A gift is traditional. I’ve read about it.”

“That’s among friends. With bitter enemies we don’t give them my lamp.”

“It’s not gonna have electricity anyway. It’s a crypt, remember?”

“What about running water? A fridge to keep your blood fresh?” Anya asked, sitting back down.

      “No.” He said.

“Well, that’s gotta suck. You should just get a hotel room or something.”

“Demon girl’s got a point. I need fresh blood. If I had a few bob for a room with an honor bar...”

“OUT! Before I get the Slayer over here to kick your ass out!”

“Don’t know why she didn’t come. Say goodbye, shed a few tears.” He cringed at the thought of seeing her cry again.

“It could be that little detail of you USING her, or it could be the fact that she has an appointment with somebody who’s actually still SCARY!”

------------------------------

She walked to Xander’s, the sun had just set and she had just gotten off the phone trying to reach Giles, the phone was disconnected. “Xander?”

      “Down here, what’s up?”

“Giles phone is disconnected, I was wondering if you’d heard from him.”

“Nope.” It was a lie, she could have called Xander, she was looking for Spike. He was nowhere to be seen.

“Where’s your roommate?” She asked nonchalantly.

“Oh you mean your BOYFRIEND? He’s gone; he took off right after sunset. Went to look for his own place and it’s a darn good thing, I was sick of him.”

“He was here for one night Xander.”

“One night WAY too long. Why don’t we call Willow and we’ll go over and see what happened to Giles’ phone.”

“Okay. Let’s go.” They began walking. “So Xander, did he say where he was going?”

      “Giles?” He asked.

      “No, Spike.”

“No, he did not, and I don’t want to see him again, EVER. And if you know what’s good for you, you’ll do the same. He’s not good for you Buffy. Vampire, on the average, aren’t good boyfriends.”

“I know Xander, spare me the lecture, but love knows no bounds.”

      “LOVE? You love him?”

“I... NO, I definitely do NOT love Spike. No.”

      “That doesn’t sound convincing.”

      “Oh.”

‘This place looks pretty good.’ He started taking some measurements, he needed a certain amount of space, it couldn’t be too small. He turned his head and a smile spread on his face. “Well. What do I spy with my little eye?” The demon stopped. “A demon. That would be... oh, right, the things I can kill.”

“Spike. Wonderful. A perfect end to a perfect day.” What the hell was Giles doing speaking Fyarl?

      “Giles?”

“Go on, then. Let’s get on with the fighting... you understand me?” He turned around.

      “Of course I understand you.”

      “I’m speaking English?”

“No, you’re speaking Fyarl. I happen to speak Fyarl. And by the way, why the hell are you suddenly a Fyarl demon? You just come over all demony this morning?” He needed a cigarette, they were certainly habit forming.

“As a matter of fact, I did. Thanks to Ethan Rayne. You have to help me find him. He must undo this and then he needs a... good being killed.”

“And I’m just supposed to help you out of the evilness of my heart?”

“Y-you help me and I-I don’t kill you.”

“Oh, tremendously convincing. Try it again without the stutter.”

“Money, I could pay you money.”

      “I like money. How much?”

      “A h-hundred dollars.”

“A hundred dollars?” Having more dealings with Buffy was worth more than that. Especially since he’d have to be mean. “You’ll have to do a lot better than that. Two hundred.”

      “Fine.”

      “Right, then.”

      “Right then.” Giles said.

“So what’s first? I run and tell the Slayer what you’ve gotten yourself into?”

“NO! When I find Ethan I can clear all this up without Buffy ever having to find out that anything happened to me at all.” Great, maybe he wouldn’t have to see Buffy at all. He hoped so; he couldn’t break her heart again. They walked out of the cemetery. “We need a car to find Ethan, we’ll get mine.”

      “Great.”

“So, why is Buffy all of a sudden upset?”

“What?” Spike asked, as if he didn’t know.

“She’s prancing around with this Riley character, why? I thought you swore up and down you’d stay with her? Change your mind? She’s upset, it was her birthday and she was sad, she’s had enough sad birthdays.”

      “Her birthday?”

“Yes. She put on a happy face, but she was hurting. Why?”

“Cause it’s not going to work.”

“Now you promised me, you said...”

“LOOK Watcher... it won’t work.” They walked for a time; he wanted to know about the bite. “I notice she has a bite mark on her neck, vampire?”

      “Yes.”

      “How’d it happen?”

      “Angel fed from her.”

      “I guessed as much, why? I don’t think he’d do that, or I didn’t.”

“He was poisoned, he needed the blood of a Slayer, HER  blood was the cure, so she made him drink from her.”

      “Oh.”

      “Why?”

      “No reason Watcher.”

“Is that why you’ve suddenly had a change of heart?”

“No, I’m evil, I lie, I cheat, I use innocent girls... it’s what I do.”

“No, it’s not Spike, you can’t fool me. It’s about mating isn’t it?” Spike looked at him and nodded. “I was wondering when that would come up. I’d rather thought Angel would have explained it to her, but apparently he did not.”

“Well the poof of a Sire of mine is not comfortable talking about these things anymore. He thinks he’s better than the rest of us on account of his bloody soul.”

“So, you’re hurting Buffy because you can’t make her your mate?”

“It’s not that simple Watcher. She belongs to Angel, period, end of story. He may have a soul, but he’s still my Sire and he’s made his claim.”

“But he left her. AND he did NOT bite her for the purpose of mating.”

“It doesn’t matter. She belongs to Angel, she’s off limits to me.”

“Is it that important that you claim her?”

“Bloody hell! Of course it is. I’m a vampire, it’s everything.”

“Well she’s human, she’s not a vampire and you’re not going to turn her either. So what does it matter?”

      “Cause it does.”

“You should tell her this. Or better yet call Angel.”

“You giving me advice on being with Buffy? I’d think you’d be the last to push us together.”

“I would be, but as I’ve found, it’s better not to argue with Buffy, she’ll push harder if you argue. AND I also know she’s very lonely and she was happy when I saw her eyes light up when I told her she needed to take blood to Xander’s. She likes you, though I don’t know why. Call Angel.”

“For what? He’s not going to give me his blessing and I can’t fight him and I can’t bite her anyway.”

      “So it’s about the chip.”

      “NO! Just let it be.”

“You should talk to her.” He opened the car door and they got in and drove away.

------------------------------

“If you can’t find third gear, don’t try for third gear!”

“I’m doing my best. I don’t know if I’m driving this thing or wearing it.”

      “It’s perfectly serviceable.”

“Funny hearing a Fyarl demon say ‘serviceable.’ Had a couple of ‘em workin’ for me once. They’re more like ‘Like to crush. Crush now?’ Strong though. You won’t meet a jar you can’t open for the rest of your life.” Giles growled at him. “What was that? Did you growl?”

“No. Listen; about this Fyarl demon.... do I have special powers? Like setting things on fire with my sizzling eye beams?”

“Well, you got the mucous thing.”

      “What? Mucous?”

“Paralyzing mucous. Shoots out through the nose. Sets on fast. Hard as a rock. Pretty good in a fight.”

      “Are you making this up?”

“Maybe. But hey, you feel a sneeze coming on, you warn me.”

“Turn here.” Stupid car gears grinding is such an annoying sound. “Down shift. Down shift.”

      “Calm down, will you?”

“I’m not sure I can. I feel like I’m changing.”

“Fine with me. So long as you pay me.”

“I really like this feeling. Sort of mindless need to destroy. This anger and rage.” He remembered that feeling.

      “Good times. Go with it.”

      “No.”

“Oh, it’s fun. I can’t do it, do it for me. Now let yourself go.”

“I refuse to become a monster because I look like a monster. I have a soul. I have a conscience. I am a human being. Oh, stop the car!” He watched as Giles got out and ran after a lady and then jumped back in the car. “Right. Let’s go then.”

------------------------------

“How did you know it was me?”

“Your eyes. There’s no one in this world that can look THAT annoyed with me.”

“Oh, right.” He paused for a moment. “I wonder how Spike fared with the Initiative.”

“WHAT?” Was Spike okay? “What do you mean?”

“Oh, I hired Spike to help me out.”

      “AND...”

“Oh, right and he drove my car to get us here, only the military were following us and I jumped out of the car and they followed Spike.”

“WHAT? YOU SENT HIM OFF TO BE CAPTURED AGAIN?”

“Well, I had to fix this and I told him I’d pay him extra if he’d be the diversion.”

      “PAY HIM?”

“Oh, yes I owe him three hundred dollars now.”

      “Three hundred?”

“Two hundred for agreeing to help me in the first place and the extra hundred for being a diversion.”

“He did this for the money?”

“I suppose, he needs it for blood anyway.”

      “Where is he?”

“I don’t know Buffy, why? I thought you two...”

“I don’t know what we... well... he left me.”

      “I know, he told me.”

“How much did he tell you?”

“Just that it wasn’t going to work out between you.”

“Did he tell you why he changed his mind?”

      “Yes.”

      “Then tell me.”

“You need to take that up with him.”

“Fine. I will, as soon as I FIND the asshole.”

      “Buffy!”

“Sorry Giles, I’m going to go find the idiot.”

He got back to his crypt, luckily the soldier boys had lost him when they crashed, he hadn’t been followed. He opened the door and lit a few candles that were there and turned on the radio. He sat down on the floor and leaned back against the cement pillar. He hoped Buffy was okay and that Giles was okay. He was hungry, he hadn’t been able to get blood on account of Giles. He closed his eyes.

************

“Slayer, I’m a demon. I am William the Bloody and I don’t do nice with Slayers unless I want something. I got what I wanted, now leave it at that. I’m bad and I’m evil and I USED YOU!” He tried to hit her but the searing pain ripped through his head and he fell backwards. His fall was aided by a blow to the head.

************

His eyes shot open. The sadness in her eyes was overwhelming. She’d seen too much pain, on account of his own Sire, the pillock. He wished it didn’t have to be like this, but there was no other choice. It had been made. He closed his eyes again.

************

He bent over and their lips collided. She pushed his duster off his shoulders and leaned back on the bed as she pulled him with her. He could feel her trembling body beneath him. Her mouth was so warm, the tip of her tongue was so soft, she struggled with his tongue, fought with him for dominance. His hand found it’s way under her shirt and she gasped as his fingers grazed her back. She pulled his shirt out of his jeans and off him. He unbuttoned her shirt and opened it to blaze a trail of cool kisses from her neck to her navel. He rolled off her and laid still. “Spike?” She asked.

************

“Spike?” He opened his eyes and she was standing there.

He jumped up quick. “Slayer, what are you doing here?”

“Patrolling for vampires, seen any hanging around?” She smiled. She was gorgeous. She was hurting. Because of him.

“No, but I think one might be coming back later. You might want to stick around.” Awkward silence. He looked away. He wanted to sweep her away with kisses.

“Oh, I come bearing gifts, well, a gift.” She held out a bag. “Not a very good gift, but it’s fresh, thought you might need some.” She put it down on top of a coffin. “So, I’ll just... I’ll just go.” She walked to the door and put her hand on the doorknob and turned back to him. “This is the part where you’re supposed to say ‘Slayer, wait! Don’t go!’ and then we hug and figure out how we can make things better. So we’ll try it again.” She turned back to the door and put her hand back on the knob and began to pull it open. He could hear her crying.

“Why’d you come?” She turned around, it hadn’t been what she was expecting.

“Just the blood. And to make sure the Initiative hadn’t gotten you again, Giles said that they were chasing you in his car.” He hopped up on the crypt and sat. She walked further in the room.

“Yeah, the car did not survive the crash, Watcher’ll need a new one, but I got out and the soldiers boy have no idea what happened. I’ve got a couple scrapes, but nothing I haven’t gotten before.” He picked up the bag. “Thanks. With Giles’ problem I hadn’t been able to get any. Speaking of, is he normal now?”

“Well he was never normal to begin with but he is no longer a demon of any kind, well unless you consider a retired librarian and full-time non-watcher a demon, which you probably don’t.” She shook her head at her own pitiful attempt at humor.

“Well, I don’t think they are the most threatening of demons, but I hear they pack quite a punch.” She looked up and walked closer.

“Nice place, a little dark, and cold.”

“Yeah, it’s a fixer upper, but it’s not Xander’s basement, that’s for sure. Although I’ve grown fond of demon girl.”

“Anya? She’s okay. She helps when she can, she helped us last year with the ascension, well sort of, she told us about it and then ran and hid some place, but it helped.”

      “Ascension? What’s that?”

“A demon on Earth achieves pure demonhood, pure evil, I don’t know. Basically the Mayor of Sunnydale turned into a really big snake at Graduation and ate some people before we blew him up. Good thing was he ate the principal, I never did like him. He must have expelled me like five times, or at least threatened me, and then of course he didn’t want me back after my disappearance.”

      “Disappearance?”

“Oh, I moved to Los Angeles for a summer, changed my name and waited on tables for three months while my friends tried to kill the demons and vampires and my ex-boyfriend, newly souled, went to Hell and was tortured mercilessly for years. And they say I lead a boring life.”

      “To Hell?”

“Oh, right, you left with Dru, and let me add thanks for helping me out.”

“I never said I’d save your life, though I probably would have, if I’d thought we would have lived.”

“Don’t be such a liar.” She hopped up on the crypt next to him. He was SO hungry. He didn’t want her to go, but he did. He just kept looking at the bag in his hands while she talked. “Anyway, he pulled the sword out, we fought, I was about to chop his head off when the curse worked, he stood up, we kissed and then I stabbed him cause only his blood would stop Acathla. Then I watched him being sucked into the pits of Hell. That’s when I left Sunnydale.”

“I’m sorry Buffy.” She looked at him, he was staring at the bag, he had been.

“OH GOD! I’m sorry, you’re hungry. You don’t want me here, I can take the hint. I’ll just go.” She went to the door.

“NO! Wait, you can stay, I can wait.”

“I’ve seen you... ah... eat before in the tub, so if you don’t care, I don’t care. Angel never fed in front of me, too embarrassed I assume, but you’re not the bashful type. I put a mug in there, I wasn’t sure if you had one. Giles said he never wanted to put coffee in it again, so...”

He pulled the mug out, “Kiss the librarian.” He said, reading the mug. He chuckled and took off the duster. She was shivering. “Put this on love or you’ll freeze.” She took it and slipped it on. He opened the bag and poured the content in the mug and sat again.

      “What does it taste like?”

      “What?”

      “Blood, of course.”

“I don’t know, it tastes like blood. Kind of salty and sweet I suppose. Ever licked your finger from a paper cut? Kind of bitter if I remember, but it’s like that, only better.”

      “Is family blood really sweeter?”

      “It was.”

      “What about Slayer’s blood?”

“I don’t know, I never fed off the ones I killed. I just killed them. The first one was taken by Angelus as a present for his Sire the bleedin’ chit. And the second? We were in a hurry, the sun was coming and Dru was having one of her episodes and I couldn’t carry her and the body, so I left the body.”

      “Oh. Bummer for you.”

“I suppose but from what I hear, it’s better.” He took another sip. “How is your back?”

“Completely healed. One of the few blessings of having superpowers, I heal fast.”

“But you still scar.” He said and she immediately put her hand up to her neck. “Angel’s work I assume.”

      “Yeah.”

      “Tell me what happened.”

“Well, so when the Master was here, I technically died and another Slayer was called, Kendra, you met her in the church.” He nodded. “Okay, so when Dru killed her in the library another one was called, her name was Faith. Anyway, make a long story short, Faith decided to use her strength for evil and started working for the Mayor and of course she hated Angel and I with a fiery vengeance. So in order to take my mind off stopping the ascension and to make me hurt, she shot him with a poisoned arrow that made him sick. I mean really sick, Wesley ran some tests and determined what it was and we found the cure was a Slayer’s blood. So, I went to kill Faith and take her to Angel. The thing that happened was that I stabbed her and she jumped off the building, and I thought she was dead. So I went to the mansion and told Angel what he had to do and he told me to get away...”

“Bloody poof.” He looked at her. “Oh, sorry.”

“He stumbled into the other room, away from me and I told him he couldn’t leave me and I punched him until he vamped out and I grabbed his head and pushed him into my neck and he drank. I blacked out and the next thing I knew, I was in the hospital.”

“What happened to the other Slayer?”

“Right... so Faith, she was found and was in a coma, still is last I heard. They say she won’t ever wake up. I killed her.”

He put the cup down and pulled her chin so she was looking at him. “NO you didn’t. She’s just in a coma, you didn’t kill her, she’s not dead. You didn’t kill her.”

“So I didn’t, the fall did, but she wouldn’t have fell if I hadn’t stabbed her so I could feed her to my ex-boyfriend. I wanted to kill her, the only person I’d ever WANTED to hurt.”

“You had to, you had no choice. You didn’t kill her, she killed herself by doing what she did.”

“Yeah, and some girl that follows a vampire into an ally killed herself by following him? That’s not a good theory.”

“Okay, I’ll leave that statement alone.” He sat back on the coffin. “Sit with me?” He extended a hand to her and when she took his hand he felt an overwhelming peace wash over him, a peace and the urge to slam into her. “Buffy?”

      “What?”

“I’m sorry for lying to you.”

      “About what?”

“I’m sorry for lying to you about using you. I didn’t, I... I love you, more than I know what to do with, but it can’t be. It’s not good. It’s impossible. I don’t want to  hurt you, but it just can’t be.”

“You’re starting to sound like Angel, so if you’re going to leave, just leave, he at least left town.” He looked down to the floor. “May I ask why it’s not going to work? You have to have a better reason than the normal life defense.”

He turned her head and ran his finger over her scar. “Did Angel tell you much about vampire culture?”

“Angel never talked about vampire anything, except that he used to kill people, he drinks animals blood, he killed his family, how vampires are made and that vampires are bad.”

“Well, some vampires choose to mate. When they want to mate, they basically hunt for a partner, much like humans do in bars. Once a vampire finds a suitable mate, they usually court the person, with the eventual goal being turning the person. In order to have a true mate, you have to have sex while they are human. Then you leave your mark, showing you drank from them while they were still human, it shows that they trust you and are a part of you. Some vampires keep their mates human for a good long time, or until they are the same age when they died, others turn them right away. Once you’re mated and bear the mark of one vampire, you belong to them. Once a vampire has chosen a mate and left it’s mark, the only way to take them apart is a challenge.”

      “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you are Angel’s. You belong to Angel, he marked you, he had sex with you, AND you carry HIS mark.”

“What?” She thought back on what he said. “You said a challenge?”

“Yes, suppose I wanted to mate with you, which I do, I’d have to challenge Angel. Either he’d have to give up possession willingly, and give me his blessing, or we’d have to fight. Supposing I win, he gives up claim and I bite you over his marks to show my victory. Then you’re mine unless someone challenges me, or he decides to, or until I die, or until you die. I don’t think he had intention of turning you, I don’t think he could. His soul would stop him from doing that to you.”

      “What about you? Would you?”

“I would want to, but I wouldn’t. My love would stop me from doing that. But if I was your mate, I’d never leave you. Once you’re mated, you’re not supposed to leave. Drusilla broke that bond.”

      “How so?”

“We were mated. She found me, chose me, marked me, had sex with me and we were mated.”

“Wait a minute! Did she turn you?”

“No, Angel did, I drank his blood, he’s my sire. Since Drusilla was still under his control, since she was fairly new, and crazy, she didn’t have permission to take childer, so he let her choose and then he turned me and gave me to her. He trained me and taught me, but I was mated to her. Then she left and broke the bond. Although that’s really a mute point because I’ve since gotten the master vampire status and she’s of course gone. Therefore I’m free to take my own mate, since she’s more than through with me.”

      “What does that mean?”

      “What?”

“Master vampire, what does it mean?”

“Oh, I’m a direct line from the Master, third generation, plus I’m older than most. But the main thing, besides being third generation, I drank of the Master.”

      “Eww, he was so old.”

“I know, ugly thing too, I wasn’t sad to see him go.”

“So since you’re a master vampire, then you can take your own mate now and Dru has no say, right?”

      “Right.”

“So? I still don’t see the problem. Has this been the reason for everything?”

      “Yes.”

“SO? Why? I don’t see the big deal.”

“Well, first off, I can’t bite you, the bleeding chip, remember? And even then, you belong to Angel.”

“He left me, he broke the bond or whatever Dru did.”

      “No he didn’t.”

      “Why not?”

“Well, first you’re not at liberty to take another mate, since you’re still human and cannot achieve master status. But besides that, I can’t challenge him.”

      “Why not?”

“Well, first off I’m not sure if I could hit him, he may be a demon, but he’s a good demon, so I’m not sure. And secondly, he’s my sire and I cannot challenge him for anything he owns. If I did, I’d be a deceitful childe and he has to dust me or make me submit to him again, thus taking away my master vampire status and I won’t do that.”

      “Submit to him?”

“Yes, he’d take me in again and I’d be his slave, basically.”

      “Oh, you mean sexually?”

      “In any way Slayer.”

      “Oh.” She was stunned.

“I’m sorry, he really didn’t tell you anything, did he?”

“So you and Angel were... a couple?”

“I was his childe and he taught me accordingly, he was in charge, I was beneath him, he was my Master, and I was his Childe, his boy. Now that I’m on my own, I can, or I could, take childer if I wanted and do that same to them.”

“So what if he gave permission?”

“Like you could get him to do that. And as is I’ve already been deceitful.”

“Oh, you mean the other night?” They smiled at the memories.

      “Yes.”

      “Don’t I get a say in this?”

“No. Granted the poof having a soul doesn’t put a kink in the logic, but it’s still the rules. You’re off limits to me Slayer, you belong to Angel. I’m sorry.”

“What if we asked him to give permission to you? Would he give permission?”

“I’d imagine not, even if he was willing to overlook the rules cause he’s not considering himself quite the vampire, he’d never say yes, just cause it’s you and me. He hates me, my own Sire, hates me.”

“Well, we’ll never know until we try.” He looked at her.

      “Slayer, it’s impossible.”

“If I asked him and he said yes, would you want to... to be my mate?” She asked, smiling at her own words.

“Yes I would indeed. Buffy, if we were mated, I’d never leave you, EVER. I wouldn’t make his mistakes. I wouldn’t run, I wouldn’t ever leave you. We’d mate until you or I die, forever.”

“Yeah, but Angel will think you want to turn me.”

      “I won’t lie, I want to, but I won’t, I can’t anyway. But it still won’t be a true mating cause I can’t bite you.”

“So we take a barbeque fork, jam it in my neck and you drink that way.”

      “That’s NOT an option.”

“I was kidding, but let’s deal with that later, that’s not Angel’s problem, as long as he gives us permission, you won’t be in trouble for making love to me, right?”

      “Right.”

“So, it looks like we’re off to Los Angeles, the city of lost souls. How appropriate.”
