While Spruce Creek originally produced Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in March of 1994, this production was different. The play was set in Japan during the medieval period, when samurai lords contested with one another. Elements of Japanese theatrical styles (specifically, Kabuki, Noh, and Bunraku) were incorporated into the production. To the left is the poster art (by Emmie P.) and to the right are some original costume designs (by Natalie T.). |
To the left: As the play opens, the Prince (Brandon D.) orders the feuding Capulets (in purple) and Montagues (in green) to keep the peace in the future, or else. |
To the Right: Lady Capulet (Ashley C., left) and Juliet (Grace O., center) listen to the Nurse (Natalie T.) relate a story from Juliet's infancy. |
To the left: Benvolio (Matt B., with lantern) and Romeo (Jet B., right) move to assist Mercution (Anthony T., prone), who has begun to lose his grip as he relates the story of Queen Mab. |
To the right: Romeo and Juliet stand on the bridge in the Capulet garden, as Romeo promises to send word to Juliet the next day regarding marriage. |
Above: Friar Laurence (Gordon W.) prays in the shrine, just before Romeo's arrival. |
To the left: Juliet lies in state on her funeral pyre, seeminly dead but only drugged. Grieving over her, from left, are Lord Capulet (Tom M.), Lady Capulet, the Nurse, and Paris (Randy B.) |
To the right: the Apothecary (Shay C.) reluctantly offers the poison to Romeo--having heard that Juliet is dead, he intends to kill himself at her funeral pyre. |
