When I first learned about this album I admit I was a bit skeptical. I was a little suspicious of a “Johnny Reb” oriented album being released on a label from England (no offense intended). Not that I’m opposed to exploiting stereotypes musically, I simply wondered if someone was playing a joke. Not long after I got this disc, though, I realized that it is a truly “Southern” album. In fact, it was recorded at a studio that is less than an hour from where I live in Georgia. Secondly, what I mistook for a hardcore disc has turned out to be a slow tempo, down-tuned slab of Southern Doom Boogie Sludge. There are elements of hardcore, though, and I have to admit, I like it. Beaten Back to Pure, in my opinion, are much more entertaining and convincing than, say, Eyehategod. In my mind BBtP are to the South what Cathedral are to England and Trouble to Chicago. And this six song E.P. is produced by Steve Austin of Today is the Day. So immerse yourself in thirty minutes of some heavy Southern flavored doom metal and you’ll see that their unique combination of elements make for an interesting album.
This album can be ordered by sending $12 U.S. to the address above. It is also available in North America from Relapse, Berserker, Custom Heavy, Lost Disciple.
