VAAKEVANDRING is Ronny Hansen on vocals, Trond Bjørnstad - Bass, and screams, Pål Dæhlen – Drums, Alexander Nygård – Guitars, Solveig Maria Magerøy - Female vocals (but not on this demo), and Morten Sigmund Magerøy - Synths, guitars and clean vocals.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER?

As Vaakevandring we have been playing together for about 2 years. I know that it sounds like a "long" time, but we live quite far away from each other. In the two years that we have been playng together we have only had about 25 days of intense work together. As you can see, our music is mainly done by one person, and that musical genius is Morten Sigmund Magerøy. Morten not only plays the synths and guitars, he also helps me with the clean vocals. Morten also has other things to do besides Vaakevandring: he has recently become a parent. You could say that Morten is Vaakevandring since he is our main man, but our concepts as a band and as individuals bring different "musical tastes." I think (at least hope) that we have something very special.

ARE YOU FROM DIFFERENT CHURCHES, OR THE SAME…?

I and Paal are involved in a church free from government control. We do have the same beliefs, and there's nothing strange, it's just that our church doesn't follow the government’s "rituals". The rest of Vaakevandring are from the ordinary [state] church.

WHAT MUSICAL INFLUENCES PAST AND PRESENT FIGURE IN YOUR MUSIC?

Morten and Alexander are mainly the ones who have decided which musical path we have taken according to their influences. Morten and Alexander are into progressive heavy metal like Dream Theater and Fates Warning. We all agree that D.T. And F.W. are great bands with a lot of energy and strength, but our sound and music don't belong in the same genre. I can't really say that D.T. figure in our music, since we play atmospheric (un)black metal. In the past, we have all been influenced musically by the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Immortal and Cradle of filth, but we are far more melodic than most of the black metal scene. But, as a comparison, we do sound a little like the more melodic aspect of Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone..) Somewhat, I can't compare us to any black metal act. What we have done, is somewhat original, I think.. (And hope)

WHAT IS THE TITLE OF YOUR DEMO, AND HOW LONG IS IT?

We have not come up with a title since our cover is not finished yet. However, our first song "Bønn" ("Prayer") is our "main" song. The lyrics to this song is "Hallowed be thy name" (Matt.6. 9 - 13) in Norwegian. It is at the moment a three song demo, and contains 17 min+ of music. Maybe, we will add one or two intro's or "relaxing middle themes", since Morten has made a few terrific instrumentals.

WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE?

Hopefully before March, but right now, we don't even have the cover art finished so we can't say an exact date, I'm afraid. But Nordic Mission will be our main distributor. To contact:

WAS STIAN AARSTAD A MEMBER OF DIMMU BORGIR OR A PRODUCER?

Stain Aarstad was a member of Dimmu Borgir at the time they made their succesful "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" album. He toured a lot with them and I think that he was more than a part time member. Stian was a great reason why D.B. got as big as they are now.

DID STIAN PRODUCE, MIX?

Stian mainly helped us out at the studio with mixing and support. Stian is a student at "Norsk Lydskole" (music/sound/studio/audio - whatever…). Stian was the only person in the studio with us, if you see what I mean.

DOES HIS INTEREST GO BEYOND MUSIC INTO LYRICS?

I am afraid not, but I think that he knew that we were a Christian band with Christian lyrics when he invited us to play in the demo. I think that he classified our music higher than our beliefs, but still I think (or hope) that it was something more, that he felt a little bit of that spirit we all need. A member of his (Stian) new black metal band "Enthral" visited us when we did the final mixing, and he could not miss our Christian lyrics, since my vocals are very clean, still blackish. I think and almost know for sure that all the black metal guys are normal, kind and understanding people. Their image is just an image, they are not so bad as they look. But what bothers me are that many of the fans of black metal are weird and practice what the lyrics of the black metal bands talk about--kill the Christians and those sorts of things… If you didn't follow me here [I do], I can give a summary: The musicians, the actors of black metal (at least the bigger bands) don't really mean what their lyrics say. I don't mean that they are Christians, but it's a image thing that makes them sell a bigger amount than their music is worth. The lyrics are attractive to teenagers, who are a bit unstable in which path to take. I don't want underestimate the ones who don't have a relationship with God but often times they have chosen the part because of the lyrics and image of a B.M. band. The fans are more into satanism than the bands. Alas, they are more dangerous.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING ON A WORLD TOUR? [a little humor on my part]

We await your invitation and are ready to tour if a good offer comes up. About our touring: if you are interested in having us play, contact Nordic Mission, or my e-mail.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOU BEFORE?

Hear us for yourselves, really. What can I say that can convince you that Vaakevandring is not like an average (un)blackmetal band. We use a lot of synths to create mood and atmosphere--and relaxation amidst the intense themes. We are Christians who perform Christian black metal. Our goal is not to sell out but to make the listeners wake up from their empty shells. (Vaakevandring means something like “to wake people up…”)

CAN WE PRINT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS?

Yes I believe so, but I'm only the vocalist. When I answer e-mails I answer I speak for myself only. Ronny-h@online.no
