Casparis Cave...
Well, it only took 1 1/2 years of prodding to convince my good friend and pastor, Andrew, to take a trip underground with me.  We decided that Casparis would be a great beginner's trip for him.  Even though there's a few easier beginner's caves out there, Casparis is one of the most "decorated" caves around.  Getting to the back of the cave isn't easy, but the payoff is high.  There's the 150 foot long "Rain Room,"  which is full of formations...  soda straws, ribbons, columns, and lots of bats...  as well as a water fall further back that rivals all others in Western Pa.
Not only did Andrew do a great job in getting through the cave, but a future trip isn't totally out of the question!   Enjoy the pics!   o(:-)
Here's Andrew in the Rain Room by one of the many formations.  As decorated as the room is, it has had it's share of vandalism.  Part of this one has been broken off.  Even with the expressed enthusiasm of his shirt, THIS could not be fixed with duct tape!  ;-)
"And here class, we have a Pennsylvania brown bat..."
(these pics are larger than most of mine, and may take a while to load...)
I think Casparis has got the "prettiest" entrance off all the Pennsylvania caves that I've seen.  What can't be seen in the picture, is the fact that there is a stream coming out along the floor of the entrance passage.  This causes the sunlight to dance along the walls of the passage.   Also unique to this cave, is it's fisure style entrance.  Most of the Pa. caves look more like a hole in a rock face.
Casparis remains one of my favorite Pa. caves, with Lemon Hole close behind.  I've heard J-4 is great, but alas, new land ownership has closed the cave.  Unless something changes, I may never get the oppertunity to experience what many have said is the best cave in Pennsylvania.  o(:-(
