The 3 Sisters Acrylic 8' x 6' Mural PAINTING #1 IN A SERIES OF 4 |
Native Americans all over Turtle Island (the America's) use a term they call 'The Three Sisters" to describe the Native American way of life through the gardening technique of planting corn, beans and squash together on the same mound. They inter-plant pole beans, squash and corn, using the strength of the sturdy corn stalks to support of the twining beans and the shade of the spreading squash vines to trap moisture for the growing crop . It is the symbolism of "The Three Sisters" however, that runs deep in the hearts of many Native Americans, as we understand that we do not stand alone. The Three Sisters story teaches us the value of each person needing each other to grow and thrive. Only in following the community of our heritage, can we succed in our lives, in our souls, in our dreams. To Native Americans the meaning of The Three Sisters runs deep into the physical and spiritual well being of the people. Known as the "sustainers of life", the Iroquois consider corn, beans and squash to be special gifts from the Creator. The well-being of each crop is protected by one of the spirtrs of The Three Sisters. Many Native American ledgends have been woven around The Three Sisters. Sisters who would never be a part from one another. Sisters , who should be planted together, savored together and celebrated together.
