GARDENS AT CRYING ' T ' RANCH Our Gardens are Open to the Public |
Amorphaphallus 'riverii' AKA voodoo lily, snake palm, devils tongue, plant of the dead |
This unusual plant originates from tropical Africa and Asia. Taking 5 years to reach maturity in order to set blooms makes it impossible for some gardeners to 'wait'. This plant is in it's 5th year. The horrible smell omitting from the flower is where the name 'Plant of the Dead' arrives from. It literally smells like dead rotten decay. |

The plants in the above picture are now 4 &5 years old, I dug the bulb last fall (2003)weighing over 9#. The bulb then bloomed in February the following year growing to a monstrous height of over 5 feet. (We won't mention the smell in the garden shop!) |
Here are some pictures of the voodoo with the afternoon sun shining through and of the voodoo 'grove', they lend quite a 'tropical' effect to any part shade garden. |
Our 'new' Tropical Garden Area: This area was started in March of 2003......watching the progress is amazing as I view my sites & photos from year to year. You can see the voodoos in the far left back of the picture. |
