February 7, 2004 (saturday)Well, Wednesday was my appointment with the midwives. The homebirth support group meeting was at 11 am and my appointment was at 12:15. I woke up at 9:30 which is when I wanted to be in Petersburg picking up mom, so needless to say I woke up fast! When we woke up Mike had a really bad toothache and to top it off, mom wasn't at home! I lost it. I crawled back in bed and just cried. I had been looking forward to my first appointment with the midwives since Mike agreed on homebirth and now I was going to have to wait another month.

Well, Mike calmed me down and decided even though we'd miss the meeting we were going to make the appointment. So, we went and picked up my mom (who had spent the night with her boyfriend) and set out for the appointment. I had called Jennifer (the hostess of the meetings and daughter of one of the midwives) and let her know we were running late. Well, we arrived at Jennifer's house at about 1:30 and the midwives had already left to visit another mother. Jennifer explained they would be back around 2:30 and was nice enough to give us directions to Taco Bell where we had lunch (hey, we don't have Taco Bell in Springfield right now!).I didn't really expect to be able to actually be seen now since we were so late, but we'd driven this far and I wanted to apologize in person. We returned to Jennifer's around 2:45 and talked to her while looking though the Baby Book (Dr.Sears) and Mothering Magazine. Mom and I were talking about cloth diapers and Jennifer showed us hers which really helped me sway mom's attitude towards them.

The midwives returned about 45 minutes after us and much to my delight we had our first prenatal appointment! We must have spent at least an hour with them, talking mostly. They had me weigh myself (165lbs), checked my glucose level and my iron count (not anemic, yay!) and squuezed my arm (blood pressue). They had life-sized models of babies at different stages in utero and they let us hold and examine the 20 weeker and it was so neat! We borowed a few books and a water birth video from the group's library, hugged and came back to Springfield. I found out all three midwives attend the births! How wonderful to have the comfort and wisdom of these three women!

Friday we were back in Petersburg to pick up mom for my OB/GYN appointment and we were actually on time! I was scheduled for an ultrasound, so my bladder was painfully full. Mom cried during the u/s, which was pretty funny. Baby was very active and was more than happy to let us know it's a GIRL!!! We got a few pics and back t the waiting room. We went back to the exam room about 5 minutes later, I was weighed and my bp was taken (again). The OB came in, asked how I was feeling, listened to the baby's heartbeat, measured fundal height. I asked her c-section rate and she estimated it to be around 30%, too hgih for my taste, but I won't have to worry about it since we're staying home and the only reason I'll end up in the hospital is if the midwives and I  think I absolutely need to go, in which cause I'll most likelt need a c-section. I did get better vibes from the doctor, but we didn't discuss natural birthing this time. It's funny, the OB spent maybe 10 minutes with me while the midwives sent over an hour. Not hard to tell which I prefer.

So, this little miracle growing inside me is Kairi Rayne. I don't think mom is very coolwith the name Kairi, since she keeps saying people will mispronounce it, but that's ok, she'll get used to it, and I'll correct people if they say her name wrong :) I think it's a beautiful name. Mike picked out Kairi and I picked out Rayne, so it's special to both of us. We love her a lot already.
