Horse's of
Middle Earth!
(In chronologic order of
first appearance. I may have missed a few so i apologise in advance. Also I'm
only bothering with the NAMED ones because otherwise this list would get ridiculous)
Bill the Pony: Obviously
a pony not a horse, but he gets forgotten enough. (He is a member of the
fellowship no matter what anyone says!) Bill was brought from a guy in Bree
(I've forgotten his name but i know Bill was named after him) He cost 12 silver
pennies and luckily for Aragorn and the hobbits the inn keeper paid for him as a
present to them. Bill was extremely miss treated before this and was severely
under weight when they got him. He was extremely loyal to the fellowship,
especially Sam who claimed Bill talked to him, because they were the first
people to have ever treated him with respect and the love and care he deservered.
Asfaloth: In the book this is Glorfindel's horse and is said to be the fastest horse in rivendell. (if I remember correctly.) However in the film Arwen steals him along with Glorfindel's entire role. EIther way this is the horse that got Frodo to Rivendell and saved his life.
"The white horse Legolas rides into Rivendell": Not named presumably belongs to the elven kingdom of Mirkwood. He/She is in about 5 seconds of footage. However Legolas rides it and therefore it's important. (Don't argue with my logic, I know i'm right)
Hasufel: Originally belongs to a man named Garulf who died in battle. This is the horse Eomer gave to Aragorn in The Two Towers. (book version). He's dark grey in colour and described as quite large.
Brego: Is a lot like Arwen, meaning he likes to steal other people's roles. In the film this is the horse Eomer gave to Aragorn. It originally belonged to Theodred (Theoden's son) who was killed by orcs. In the extended version of The Two Towers Aragorn comments that Brego is a kingly name. He's correct because Brego was some Rohirric hero/king of the past. (Or something i wasn't really paying much attention at that part of the book)
Arod: This is the horse that Eomer gave to Legolas. In the book it was supposed to be a difficult horse to handle... until Legolas had him off course, then he calmed down instantly. (A sensible horse, only liking elves!)
Shadowfax: If you need to know who Shadowfax is I suggest you go watch the film! For those of you too busy staring at Legolas at this point of the film I'll simply say "He's Gandalf's horse".
Firefoot: This is Eomer's horse. Though he was seen with Eomer before Shadowfax's appearance i'm putting him after as his name wasn't mentioned in the book until he rode to Helm's deep. (Eomer was never banished in the book, though he was imprisoned)
Snowmane: Theoden's horse. Nothing more I can really say.
This brings me up to the point where I have read in the books, and seeing as i've only seen Return of the King i cant remember any more, if there is any. I'll update this page if i find any more information but i think i've covered most of the horse's anyway.
