Misconceptions

Duo’s hands were warm on Wufei’s shoulders and he leaned in close until his lips just brushed Wufei’s ear. Wufei could hear him breathe with startling clarity, and he tensed in anticipation in what he was about to hear.

“It’s been confirmed. Unidentified vehicles used to transport large weapons have been coming from St. Marie’s private school. We suspect that the factory is located in the back, where the forest provides some cover. Search that area.”

Wufei nodded, making sure to keep his head in the crook of Duo’s neck so anyone looking wouldn’t be able to read his lips. “Understood,” he murmured, “We are taking a nature hike tomorrow in any case. We will search then. I'll inform Yuy.”

“Alright.” Duo straightened up, and tugged his cap down lower instinctively. Wufei saw his eyes dart around quickly, checking for anything suspicious. Duo grinned down at Wufei, looking a little bit too mischievous for Wufei’s liking.

Duo shot forward quickly to give the Chinese pilot a peck on the cheek, then darted away at Wufei’s yelp. “See ya!” He called cheerfully, and disappeared into the crowd.

Wufei hissed at Duo under his breath, and began the walk back to St. Marie’s Catholic School. He fought the urge to tug self-consciously on the skirt that still felt foreign on his body. It had already been about two weeks, and he was still adjusting to being a “girl.” Everything from the extra weight on his chest to the shoes that pinched his shoes felt awkward to him. Wufei wondered if Yuy was having the same problems.

He walked slowly to admire the architecture of the small town that resided nearby the school. This was probably the best part of the St. Marie’s – they allowed the students to come visit the quaint little town every Sunday if they so wished, as long as they did well in school. While both Heero and Wufei maintained good grades, Heero had chosen to stay behind. As a result, Wufei had been given the task of coming to town alone and getting in contact with Duo. Wufei suspected that the other boy was going over the details of their mission again. Crazy workaholic.

“Wufei?”

He paused, and turned to see Millie, a petite brunette who had immediately taken to Wufei upon his arrival to the school, running towards him. Heero kept quiet about it, but Wufei knew the other pilot was quite amused at this and didn’t try resisting the occasional smirk at Wufei’s expense. Wufei didn’t think that he should find this so funny, as Heero had his own female nuisance in the form of a blonde peace-preaching menace whom Wufei was fairly certain was stalking the other boy.

Politeness keep Wufei rooted to the spot so that she could catch up. “Who was that?” Millie inquired when she reached him.

Wufei’s eyes widened. She’d seen Duo? “Umm…” He managed intelligently. He mentally berated himself. Why hadn’t he thought ahead in preparation for this kind of situation?

Millie gave him a sly look. “Was he your boyfriend?”

Wufei choked.

“He’s so handsome!” Millie asked excitedly, oblivious. She grabbed Wufei’s arm and pulled him with her towards their school. “Or at least I think he was. Why does he wear that hat? It covered all his features! I couldn’t get a good look at him! Is he as good looking as I think he is?”

Wufei pulled his arm out of her grasp so he could walk on his own, and wondered if she would stop if he simply ignored her question.

“Fine, don’t answer me,” Millie giggled, “Well, if his face looks as good as his backside, I think you’ve got a pretty good catch.”

Wufei heard an undignified squeak of indignation, and realized, to his mortification, that it came from him.

“Oh, sorry!” Millie giggled to herself again, “I won’t check out your guy’s goods anymore.”

Wufei quickly strangled the urge to bash either his, or Millie’s, head on the nearby brick wall.

When they reached the school, Wufei was already quite tired of Millie’s incessant stream of words.

“I wish I had a boyfriend as who would visit me here,” she was saying wistfully, “My ex-boyfriend broke up with me when I came here. I was devastated… I think I could have loved him, you know? But he’s nothing like – oh what’s his name?”

“Duo.” Wufei said automatically, unable to think of any sort of fake name right on the spot and hoped that it wouldn’t come back to bite him in the butt later.

“Really? That’s a bit of an unusual name? Well, I suppose I can’t say much since I dated a guy named Sheet once… And that was his real name too. Anyways…” Wufei tuned her out.

Wufei headed to the room he was forced to share with Heero. Millie followed, still chattering. He sped up a bit, hopeful that she would take the hint. She didn’t. Wufei was beginning to wonder if there was any polite way to shake her off.

He stopped at his room’s door. “Well,” he said politely, “this is my room.”

Millie stood there, smiling at him with an uncomprehending look on her face. He looked back at her, wondering if she would get it.

“I want to say hi to Hera!” She said brightly. Wufei quickly swallowed a groan.

“Alright,” Wufei agreed reluctantly, and unlocked the door. He was surprised when the door swung open on its own, and he was suddenly face-to-face with ‘Hera.’

Heero stood right in front of him, in all of his stoic glory. Wufei was startled to find that the two of them were standing only about an inch apart, and he could feel Heero’s breath on his face. The closeness was oddly reminiscent of the position he had been in with Duo, but for some reason, he was more uncomfortable. Wufei felt both irritable and confused as the heat rose in cheeks.

Heero blinked at him, and took a step back. Wufei exhaled a soft sigh of relief, and viciously crushed an almost disappointed feeling.

“Did you talk to Duo?” Heero demanded.

“You know Duo too, Hera?” Millie chirped from behind Wufei. Heero’s eyes widened slightly in shock at her, and then turned a dangerous look at Wufei. Wufei stared back, wide-eyed, jaw working furiously as he tried to explain things to Heero.

“Uh…” Wufei wanted to hit himself.

“Wufei’s boyfriend!”

Heero raised an eyebrow. Wufei cursed angrily in his head and glared daggers at Heero. The eyebrow going up a bit more was the only response.

Wufei turned slowly and gave Millie a painstaking smile. “Duo… is… Hera’s… er… brother.”

“Oh,” Millie said dubiously, “But then why does it seem like she didn’t know about Duo…?”

“Erm,” Wufei said slowly, thinking furiously, “Because… we were trying to keep it a secret from her.”

Millie’s eyes rounded. “Oh!” she cried, “I’m sorry! I didn’t know!”

Wufei wondered if his smile had turned into a grimace yet. “Uh… It’s not a problem… We were, uh, going to tell her soon anyways…”

The girl’s eyes shone with unshed tears of shame. “Are you sure…?”

Wufei nodded vigorously, “Yes, yes. Now, um… I need to talk to Heer—Hera alone, please.”

“Alright!” Millie practically sprinted away.

“Boyfriend…?” The monotonous voice almost sounded amused. Bastard.

“Shut up.” Wufei groused, and shoved his way past Heero into their room.
