The purpose of program maintenance is to ensure current programs are operating error free,
efficiently, and effectively.
- This is the final step in the programming development process.
- It ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of any computer program.
Program maintenance activities fall into two categories:
- Operations concern activities:
- (1) Locating and correcting operational errors.
- (2) Making programs easier to use.
- (3) Standardizing software.
- Changing Needs activities:
- (1) Programs may need to be modified over time.
- (2) New tax laws may come into effect.
- (3) There may be new information needs.
- (4) There may be new company policies.
