Operation Systems

An operating system is the software that controls the computer's use of its  hardware resources.  These resources include the keyboard, mouse, printer, monitor, storage devices, and memory.

An operating system also provide services to run programs, manage data, and ensure efficient operations of the computer system.  These services are  classified into two categories:

  

Utilities

Utilities are a subcategory o system software designed to augment the operating system by providing a way for a computer user to control the allocation and use of hardware resources.  Some utilities are included the operating system others are purchased separately from software publishers and vendors.  Examples:

 

  

Device Drivers

Device drivers are system software that tells the computer how to communicate with peripheral devices.  Examples are Print, Mouse, and CD-ROM drivers.

 

  

Programming Languages

Programming languages are translators that convert English-like programming instructions into  a format that computers can interpret and directly process.
