The Hill Cumorah Pageant-"America's Witness
for Christ" is the world's largest outdoor drama, and is sponsored by the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is located near Palmyra,
NY on Highway 21, two miles north of Thruway exit 43.
The Pageant is put together by over 600 volunteers
who devote their time and money. Since the Pageant is put on by volunteers
the parking, admission, and seating for 9000 is free. Food is also available
from vendors.
The Hill Cumorah Pageant is based on the Book
of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
A brief overview of the Hill Cumorah Pageant:
- The Book of Mormon begins in Jerusalem 600
years before the birth of Christ.
- The Lord commands a prophet to escape the
destruction of Jerusalem by taking his family into the wilderness.
- Eventually this small group builds a ship
and sails to Ancient America where they establish a great civilization.
The Pageant tells the story of these people as recorded in the Book of
Mormon.
- The crowning event of the Pageant, and the
Book of Mormon, is when the resurrected Christ appears to the inhabitants
of the American continent, and establishes his church, after his ministry
and crucifixion in Jerusalem.
- Later a prophet named Mormon condensed the
history of these people, and recorded it on metal plates. He then gave
these plates to his son, Moroni, who completes the task and buries them
in the Hill Cumorah, the very hill where the Pageant is performed.
- The Pageant ends with the coming forth of
this ancient record through a modern day prophet named Joseph Smith. This
record is known as the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
The narrator also leaves his testimony, which goes something like this:
"After all the testimonies which have been given of Him, this is the testimony
last of all which we give of him; that He lives."
"The Savior will return. Soon He will be here."
