The students make their own stockings in the art center. No one is told that they have to make a stocking or how it should look. I do, however, provide many samples for the children to look at before they start.
Recycling Christmas Cards
Ask parents to donate old Christmas cards. Cut off the card fronts and you'll be ready for these activities next year.
* Have children sort the cards according to subject. Then have them compare and contrast the Santas, reindeers, trees, etc. This activity generates delightful comments for a wonderful oral language experience.
* As a class project, have youngsters graph the cards by subject matter. What is the most frequently used art theme or character?
* Staple the art from the cards to construction paper and have children write their own season's greetings.
