Ocean

Sand/water table ideas:
*Make an ocean. Add sand, water, shells, and plastic ocean animals to your sand/water table and you have your very own ocean.
*Put magnetic letters in your sand/water table (or put small magnets on the back of paper letters). Have the children "fish" with a magnet for matching capitals and lowercases. Have them see if they can find all the letters in their names.
*If you don't have a sand/water table, just a small wading pool instead.

* Look at a map or globe. Name and point out the five different oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctic).
* Make an ocean diorama.
* Definately have an aqaruium in your classroom! Allow the children to observe and draw the fish as well as to take turns feeding them.
* Cut out shapes of fish and write high frequency words on them. Attach a paper clip so that they be attracted to the magnet on the end of a "fishing pole."

Put a small wading pool in your reading center. Put beach towels on the floor and add lounge chairs to create the beach atmosphere.

Poems
Sharks and starfish, giant whales,
Octopus, lobster, fish with sails
All make their home in the deep blue sea
The sponges and the sea anemone
I'll build a boat that can carry two
We'll ride the waves, just me and you.

I found a seashell at the shore,
And held it to my ear.
I thought I heard the ocean roar,
As I held it near.
And now when I remember
My summer at the sea,
My seashell echoes back the sound
In pleasant memory.
