Big Book My Five Senses by Aliki

There are five senses that help us discover the world around us:
* sight-which helps us describe color, size, and shape
* hearing-which helps us describe volume (loud or soft), pitch (high or low)
* taste-which helps us describe flavor (sweet, sour, salty, bitter)
* touch-which helps us describe texture (sharp, bumpy, hairy, squishy, smooth, etc.)
* smell-which helps us describe odor or scent

Language Arts:
* Read and talk about Helen Keller. Then write/draw about what it would be like to be missing one of your senses.
* Discuss the sense(s) you would use to experience these:
alarm clock, flowers, telephone, train, doorbell, popcorn, cake, sandpaper, television.
* Make a list of adjectives or "describing words" to describe each sense. For example, sight (bright), touch (sticky), taste (sour), smell (delicious), hearing (ringing).
* Describe the smell of different places, such as the lunchroom, a zoo, your grandma's kitchen, the ocean, and a park.
* Make a chart that has two columns: good smells and bad smells. List different scents under each column appropriately.
* Have the students complete the sentences:
I like to touch?
I like to taste?
I like to smell?
I like to see?
I like to hear?

Sung to the tune of This Old Man:
With my eyes, I can see
Robins nesting in the trees
I see and hear and smell and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much.

With my ears, I can hear
Distant noises and sounds quite near
I see and hear and smell and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much.

With my nose, I can smell
Frangrant folwers in the dell
I see and hear and smell and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much.

With my mouth, I can taste
Doughnuts, which are chocolate glazed
I see and hear and smell and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much.

With my hands, I can feel
Bananas with a slippery peel.
I see and hear and smell and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much.

* Blindfold the students and describe objects to them based only on what can be seen. Do not name it! Have the students guess what object you are describing.

* Blindfold the students and allow them to explore an object by taste, touch, hearing, and smell.

* Have the children list sounds that they hear on the playground, in the lunchroom, and in the classroom. Later revisit those places wearing earplugs. Discuss later how things were different.

* Put different objects in separate boxes or bags. Allow the children to feel the objects without seeing them. Let them describe them and then guess what the objects are.

* Taste several different types of food (lemons, coffee, cherries, cake, pickles, etc.). Then classify the foods using the words sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.
