FALL\WINTER 2006\2007
You have to hand it to Boy George. Although the karma chameleon has a court case looming (for drug possession and filing a false police report), he still managed to fly to London to stage the debut of B-Rude. The label, which has shown twice in New York already - is a streetwear brand with cheeky, irreverent touches. It was a good-humoured finale to London Fashion Week. The audience consisted of flamboyant clubbing types. Young pretenders with feather eyelashes sat alongside 80s stalwarts Pam Hogg and Siobhan Fahey.
Suddenly, a phone rang and Jamaican Patois filled the room. The soundtrack was fabulous; the best I'd heard all week. A mash-up mixture of ragga dancehall and Rude Boy commotion; it was enough to get people winding down 'dem waaiist'. As for the models, the men (working it for the cameras) were so gorgeous I lost my concentration. The first one strutted his stuff in a flying hat and boxer shorts emblazoned with silver beetles. One guy even dropped his trousers. It was all very clubland friendly - one outfit consisted of a long sleeved tee (emblazoned with dollar signs), more boxer shorts and doc marten boots. Sequinned trousers, latex polo shirts, tracksuits, combat trousers and tailoring with bondage details are also in the mix. More controversial are the printed slogans. One T-shirt asks, "Who the hell is Anna Wintour?" whilst the back of a jacket says, "You are shallow and mean yet I still love you."
The womenswear is sassy but lacks the conviction of the menswear somehow. Particularly mischievous is a black mini skirt finishing above a model's hips, and exposing her bum. It was camera, flash, action at that point! T-shirt dresses crop up too - printed with CND signs, hand grenades, insects and safety pins. There are some nice pieces, yet the question remains - is the quality strong enough to show at Fashion Week?
Whatever the case may be, the man himself walked out to rapturous applause and a standing ovation. What a party. We're just glad we were invited.... (Words: Bianca Donnelly )
