The Andania was launched on November 1, 1921 and completed on May 24, 1922. She made her maiden voyage on June 1, 1922 from Southampton to Montreal. In 1925 she was placed on the Hamburg to New York service. In 1927 she changed to the Liverpool-Glasgow-Belfast-Quebec-Montreal service in conjunction with Anchor-Donaldson Line sailings. She was fitted out as an armed merchant cruiser in September 1939. On June 16, 1940 the Andania was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-A 70 nautical miles from Reykjavik. (The date of sinking given in British sources, June 15, is correct according to British time. In German time the attack occurred on the 16th at 00.27 hours)
