The Ascania was originally laid down as Gerona for the Thomson Line in 1911. She was taken over before completion and re-named Ascania. She made her maiden voyage from Southampton-Quebec-Montreal on May 23, 1911. On June 13, 1918 the Ascania was wrecked 20 miles east of Cape Ray, Newfoundland, while on the Liverpool to Montreal run in ballast. No lives lost.
