The Etruria was launched in September 1884 and began her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on April 25, 1885. Prior to this she was hurriedly prepared as an armed merchant cruiser during the Russian scare. In 1893 her accommodations were altered to 500 - 1st Class, 160 - 2nd Class, 800 - 3rd Class. In 1901 she was fitted with wireless. In 1902 when she lost her propeller, sail was set for the Azores, but she ended up being towed by Frederick Leyland's William Cliff. Salvage of ?11,000 was awarded. Cunard chartered Royal Mail's Ebro to bring home the passengers, and Etruria was towed to Liverpool. In 1909 she was sold for ?16,750 and broken up at Preston, Lancashire.
