"The Clann" - MacLinks' October 2000
Special Connection Award Winner for ~ Scottish Culture and Heritage ~ What an amazing site!!! Bring yourself back in time to view the Scots as they were in the past. Although The Clann is one of Scotland's top fight display teams it fills the gap even further by educating all in the rich and varied past of Scotland's people. You have to see it to believe it!! A tremendous educational website for student, parent, teacher and researcher. -- A hearty and well deserved, "Well Done" to you Ian and all of your colleagues. |
Defend and Protect ~ "The Jacobites" |
If one were to characterize the Scot's with one word,
that word would be "Honour". The era of the Jacobites illustrates this
point precisely. Political sides were drawn and the men and woman of
Scotland stood by their beliefs to the very end. In many cases this meant
death in battle and/or forced migration through the Clearances for the next
150 plus years.

The Clearances of Scotland |
For many, "The Scottish Clearances", represent massive migration from the Highlands of Scotland to all points of the compass throughout the world. It is my understanding that this century long wave of movement was due to a number of factors ranging from crop failures to political means of removing many of the Highland communities from their ancestral homes. The history of these clearances was recorded as being devastating, painful and extremely cruel to the many that were involved. This writer has read and actually visited many of the burnt out buildings left behind as a grim reminder of the methods used to remove the non profitable highlanders from their ancient home lands. In researching this topic I have come across a good deal of visual and written evidence; the most tell tale information comes from the Highland Clearances Memorial Fund Series. Their documentation of actual verified Clearance dates, numbers of people and places tenants were moved from can be seen on the above website. The dates begin in 1783 and end in 1881 with a rough estimate of around 170 000 highlanders being removed from their homes. The following is an excerpt taken from Douglas
MacGowan's work on the era of the Scottish Clearances. I have included
this excerpt as well as some of his pictures to illustrate what these times
were like for the Scottish Highlanders.
- George Macdonald; describing the 1814 clearance of Strathnaver Douglas Macgowan's Chronological History of the, Scottish Clearances can be viewed from the pre 1800s to the 1860s and onwards to the present. The author's presentation at this web site gives the researcher a chart illustrating sections of information about these harsh times in Scottish History and their role in altering Scottish History. Another great web site concerning the Clearances comes from author and historian, Robert M. Gunn. The author has written a book; "Highland Clearances . . .its' causes, effects and results" Robert's work is written in 5 chapters (the 5th is still under construction) which can be read on line. The first four chapters are articulate and quite clear as to how the author feels about these events. They also contain a number of pictures and paintings giving the reader a sense of being part of these terrible times. Like Douglas, Robert has a line chart titled, "Clearance
Chronology". Robert illustrates and explains about the two periods of
major clearances: 1782-1820 and 1840-1854. Each period is shown to have
specific years for the events that occurred during the Clearances.
Should these events ever have happened? Was it simply ignorance and greed? Check out this link!

~ Through the use of modern technology Angus Macleod has created a CD that describes the clearance of 109 families from the Island of Lewis and their migration to Canada ~ 1851 ~ A Legacy of the Highland Clearances he Silent Ones is the fulfillment of a life long dream for composer Angus Macleod. Over three years in the making, The Silent Ones has taken Macleod on a personal odyssey of self discovery to Scotland's Isle of Lewis, the Eastern Townships of Quebec and finally to the main location of the story, Huron Township, Ontario. The CD unfolds a true tale of tragedy and triumph chronicling the migration of 109 families from the Island of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides to the remote backwoods's of nineteenth century Upper Canada. Victims of a kind of nineteenth century ethnic cleansing known as the Highland Clearances, the Lewis emigrants were evicted from their Hebridean crofts in 1851 by landowner James Matheson. The crofters were then transported overseas where they settled together in a block of farms in Bruce County, Ontario; maintaining their language and culture well into the twentieth century. The group has become known as the Lewis Settlers. You can visit Angus McLeads' WebSite at http://www.torquil.net/ to read more
about this time in Scottish and Canadian history. View the table of
contents and you will see audio links and how you can obtain the CD, "The
Silent Ones". The audio links will lead you through the conflict created
by the Clearances and how Angus has adapted modern technology to make this
episode a living reality in his CD.
