Craigmillar castle is located on the outskirts of Edinburgh Scotland on the southern edge of the city. The castle is uninhabited although the walls and towers are more or less intact. These ruins offer a great opportunity for exploration as many interesting castle architectural features are exposed. There are vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, spiral staircases, crenallations, and sculpted panels that are readily accesible. I enjoyed roaming around this castle because it offered a nice contrast to Edinburgh castle in that you could get more of a feel for how castles were constructed both as defensive fortificaiton and living quarters. |
