Experience summary July 29, 1999 - players

Session begins with the party camped outside of the Corrimony Cairn. The undead in the cairn have been destroyed and the wizard (necromancer?) is dead. The party is preparing to break camp. It is mid-day on October 15. Tarl the cleric seals the entrance to the Cairn by using a stone shape spell and sanctifies the area.

Tarl uses speak with dead to further interrogate the dead wizard, and he learns the command word to trap Lio’s warp marble (word is "Shabosz").The dwarves bury the body of the wizard.

The party travels through glen Urquhart back to Loch Ness and the Castle Urquhart. The trip is uneventful and life seems to be returning back to normal in the Glen. Kieren and the party are given a lukewarm reception by the residents of the Glen. The party arrives at Castle Urquhart at dinner time. Kieren is greeted at the castle gate by one of his kin who mentions that the clan was concerned about his sudden disappearance several days ago.

The party returns to the 2nd floor of the old keep in the castle. Their dwarven companions, Agate Thorwallen (fighter), and Gawain cleric of Thor, are there drinking ale with a strapping lad named Magnus. Magnus Urquhart is the son of Kieren’s cousin John. The trio are singing dwarven battle songs, and they appear to be drunk. Gawain appears to be fully recovered from his wounds. Hearty greetings are exchanged and appropriate introductions are made. The party tells Agate,Gawain, and Magnus about their adventures.

Agate and Gawain ask Kieren when he plans to rescue his daughter. They tell him they are ready to go, and Magnus has agreed to join the party. Kieren soon learns that Magnus’ older brother Alpin was killed by the MacLeod’s during the most recent raid/battle. Magnus is intent on avenging his brother’s death and Kieren’s quest will allow him to do that.

Gudrum and Hendel announce that they are returning to Inverness to sell loot and take some much deserved R&R. They tell the rest of the party that they will be happy to take any messages or treasure to Inverness. The party divides up gold and gems they have acquired in their adventures. There is a heated debate about the spellbooks that they found in the crannogs in Loch Bruicheach. It is decided that Kieren and Lianna will keep two of the spellbooks containing lesser pictish magics . The remaining 4 spellbooks with pictish magics will be sent with Gudrum and Hendel to Inverness to be sold to the wizard Emchath or to Misha (highest bidder). The proceeds from the sale are to be divided amongst party members. The pictish wizard Emchath is to hold proceeds for party members that are not returning to Inverness right away.

Kieren slips off to meet with Alexander, chief of the Urquhart clan. He finds Alexander drinking with clan members in the great hall. There is a terse exchange between Kieren and Alexander. Alexander accuses Kieren’s companions of being spies for the picts( or worse) and demands that Kieren’s party leave Castle Urquhart by morning. Alexander is also angry with Kieren because Magnus intends to join Kieren’s quest. Kieren is dismissed abruptly.

On his return to the old keep he meets John, who is Magnus’ father. John gives Kieren a lukewarm greeting and then implores him to convince Magnus’ not to join Kieren’s quest to the Isle of Skye. John relates that Magnus is intent on revenge and will not listen to reason. Further, he says that Magnus’ blood will be on Kieren’s hands if Magnus is killed on the quest. As a last resort, John agrees to provision Kieren and his party should they need it. If Magnus is going, then John wants the party to be well provisioned.

Rhyawdd seeks out Gawain the cleric and asks if he can cure Rhyawdd’s blindness. Gawain agrees to help, but in his inebriated state is unable to cure the blindness.

Kieren and Lianna spend several hours studying their spellbooks with pictish magics. Kieren learns the magic missile spell.

Lianna meets privately with Gudrum and gives him 5000 gp for Misha to pay off Lianna’s indenture. Lianna also gives Gudrum the wand that Misha had sent to her when she was blasted through the pictish gateway beneath Urquhart castle.

The party spends an uneventful night in Castle Urquhart.

Morning of October 16, the party makes ready to depart. Gawain tries 3 times to dispel Rhyawdd’s blindness but is unsuccessful. Lio restocks his supply of arrows. The party leaves the castle. Gudrum, Hendel, and Rhyawdd head north to Inverness. The rest of the party goes to John Urquhart’s home in the Glen to provision. John provides the party with enough dry goods for a week. Magnus gathers his equipment and says goodbye to his family. Kieren has a terse exchange with Magnus’ brother Molloch. Molloch indicates that he will hold Kieren responsible if anything ill befalls Magnus.

The party heads south along the Great Glen to Glen Moriston. It takes most of the day to get there and the party decides to make camp. They have an uneventful night.

Morning of October 17, it is brisk (46’F) and a heavy fog fills the Glen. The party proceeds cautiously up Glen Moriston to the west. Brook, who is on point, hears something big ahead of the party. He investigates and finds 4 stag beetles burrowing in the hillside. They do not notice him. The party decides to by-pass the giant beetles by crossing the river Moriston. The river is 75’ wide and deep at this point. Brook takes a rope and crosses the river to tie a safety line for the others use. Tarl tries to walk on the surface of the river and finds that he can (must be the magic ring he found). Lianna and the dwarves use magic to cross the river without getting wet. Kieren and Magnus wade across the river.

Shortly afterwards, Magnus asks the party to build a fire so that he can dry off and warm up. Brook quietly uses his magic to dry out the wet party members. The remainder of the days travel is uneventful. The fog lifts by 2 PM and the party travels a total of 10 miles on the rough broken terrain. By dusk they find a suitable campsite on the south side of the river and make camp for the night. The night is uneventful until dawn.

Morning of October 18, 5 AM - Brook hears something large approaching the camp. He wakes the others. As he finishes this he sees 4 large figures (24’ tall) come through the trees into the clearing where the camp is. Before he can do anything, Lio hails the giants in the pictish tongue. The giants respond to Lio and take no further action. There is a brief exchange in pictish but the tense situation dissipates. The giants proceed east along the river in the direction that the party came from. Lio tells the others that the cloud giants were a hunting party looking for cattle. He also mentions that the giants warned him of a nearby hobgoblin den on the south side of the river as well as several goblin warrens on the north side of the river. The giants also made some inquiry about a large copper dragon named Furnius, who is a friend of theirs.
