Fishing on Lake Nipissing - Fishing Tips
Walleye in July and August
In July of 2001, I had the pleasure of meeting a Mr.Thorne from Ontario who was vacationing at Tom Rae Lodge with his family.  Every morning, he would head out onto the main lake in his boat and every afternoon he would return with a limit of walleye.  After four days I had to ask him what his secret was to consistently catching walleye in July.  He explained that the walleye were schooled up out in the main lake near the Manitou islands approximately 8 miles from the lodge.  The schools of walleye were holding in 35 feet of water and relating to small humps and ridges on the bottom of the lake.  These features were only 1 to 3 feet above the lake bottom.  The best presentation for catching the fish was vertical jigging using as small a jig as possible and tipping the jig with a nightcrawler.

The only downside was the long trip to get to the Manitou islands.  Mr. Thorne had brought his own boat, which was equiped with a sizable  motor and fuel tanks.  He also had a GPS with the coordinates for the best walleye fishing spots.  If you are serious about catching walleye during the dog days of summer, then you may want to consider fishing near the Manitou islands.  Just be certain that you have the right equipment and a good weather forecast.
