Alcuin smiled, and was about to answer her, but he was beaten to it by a dragon. A loud, ringing bugle spread throughout the Weyr, signalling the start of a hatching. Without a word, they both dashed out, heading to the Hatching Sands.
The ten eggs were all rocking, but none had yet hatched. Alcuin fidgeted nervously, hoping to get it over with so that he could off the scalding sands.
The first to break was a fairly small egg. A dark green tail sprouted from it, as several people gasped. The green dragon hatched quickly, looking over the female candidates. It quickly made it's choice, and raced to Rea!
You are mine, Rea. Rea heard the green say softly. The green dragon stood up on her hind legs, and unfurled her wings. Her bright, white wings. And now I reveal myself in my true image. Rea, no other dragon could possibly have you. I am...
"Sanglith." Rea whispered, finishing the statement. "Her name is Sanglith!" She grinned, and met Alcuin's eye. He smiled at her, and assured her that he would join her and Sanglith soon, with a dragonet of his own.
After they had left, Alcuin turned back to the eggs, where, to his surprise, two eggs had already hatched. A brown dragon and a smaller black lay sprawled on the ground. The larger brown trampled his brother in his rush to get ot his chosen. Alcuin stared down in shock, as the brown dragon stared back up at him. No one is better than you, A'cuin. The brown said triumphantly.
Alcuin grinned. "No one is better than you either, Manalith." Alcuin, or rather, A'cuin, said.
Now why don't we go eat, so I can meet Rea and Sanglith? Manalith said as he raced off the sands.
"Why not?" A'cuin laughed.
