The houses along the narrow streets of a traditional Algerian town are made of whitewashed stone or brick with shaded inner courtyards.  As industry grows, blocks of small homes are built along with apartments .
In small mountain villages, houses are just one-room dwellings with walls made of uncemented stones or clay mixed with grass.  Some houses are built on mountaintops above fig and olive groves and are made of stone.
