Run-Away:
I owned and raced Run-Away from 1984-1992. Over those 8 years, it slowly transformed from a $600 junkyard beater to one of the most competitive 6 cylinder Jeeps on the east coast. I started out by putting 33" tires and a 2-1/2" shackle lift on it. It then received a header and a huge 350cfm Stromburg 1-barrel carb off a 52 Caddy. At this point it ran consistant 7.2's in the 300' sand drags. I next added a bigger cam and had some extensive head work done. (planed .100" and a full competition port and polish job) These changes really woke it up and I got it down to running deadly consistent 6.6's. The final step was to tear the motor down and add new forged pistons, fresh rings and bearings and bigger valves and springs. I also added an aluminum intake and a tweaked out 580cfm Holley 2-barrel. I also took it off the street, removing the windshield, passenger seat, flooring, etc. With this we were getting down to low 6.3's but started breaking stuff. I was dumping the clutch at 4-5,000 rpm, hanging the front tires 12" high for about 5' and shifting at about 6-7,000.  We could not find a cam button to go with the cast aluminum timing cover to stop the cam from walking back in the block and driving the distributor shaft up into the cap. About every 8-10 passes it would either spit out the timing chain out thru the cover or break the rotor button. At the end of the 1992 season I finally laid her to rest......
