THE MUMBAI METAPOHOR, TAO ART GALLERY, MUMBAI, 1999
Untitled

This group of three motorised works was done for a group exhibition of young contemporary artists in Mumbai.

As with 'Matter Drawings', 1999, I wanted to explore the concept of slow movement in matter.  Each of the three boxes have tubular rods fitted in them, which rotate.  This movement is visible if one looks closely at the tubes on which grey barcode -like painted lines appear and disappear, as the rods rotate.  In making a group of three differently proportioned boxes, at different heights, the work generates a relationship within itself.  The rotation of rods in each unit differs from the other, hence, different ' pulses' are set in motion.

The work developed from the concept that the objects surrounding us are all vibrating at a certain frequency/pulse, which determines their physical property and function.
