The Kindest Heart

I do not own the characters in the Lord of the Rings. I would never claim to. I simply needed to write this piece. Consider it my homage to a story I love.

            I never doubted Mister Frodo.

Many times on this seemingly insane quest we found ourselves undertaking, I wondered. Many times I had to ask myself if this responsibility we had shouldered would not prove to be simply too much for four small hobbits such as ourselves to accomplish. After all, we were so very little in a world that was so very vast. What could we possibly hope to achieve?

But we won out in the end, didn’t we? At a great and terrible price, yes, but victory was ours.

            Thanks to my Mister Frodo.

I never doubted his ability to see this through. His strength may have given out at times. His mind may have had its moments of madness. But I never doubted the strength of his heart.

If there was one person in this world who had a kind and decent heart, it was Mister Frodo.

I loved him then as I love him still. He was my best and oldest friend. He was the embodiment of everything good and kind.

But he sailed from the Grey Havens with Gandalf and Bilbo, in the end. This world was too harsh after what he had been made to suffer along our journey. No one should have to pay the price he did. But Mister Frodo sacrificed a great deal to save us all.

I think at times that he died there on that lonely stretch of rock, as we waited for eternity to claim us. I have come to believe that, in that last moment of clarity when he could finally remember the Shire that he had always loved so very much, his spirit passed beyond the boundaries of this world to complete his journey into the next. That moment was the end of all things for him. The ring’s terrible power had claimed his soul as its last sacrifice.

I miss him. I will always miss him. I only hope that he has found happiness wherever his spirit has ended up at.

And I hope he continues to remember the Shire and his faithful Sam. I know that I will never forget him.

Thank you, Mister Frodo, for having the strength to see this through. Thank you for your sacrifice. And thank you for having the kindest heart I have ever known.
