Background:
Paran's father ran the gladiator pits for the King of the Southland. placeholder, placeholder, placeholder.

Inspiration:
Paran is without a doubt, probably the best I've rolled for a character. 3 rolls of 17, is something I've never done or equaled in any RPG. The closest would probably be the time I rolled 00 for percentile strength for two characters in a row. Only probably was, one of them was a dwarf, and dwarfs could only have 99 in percentile strength. The DM, my old friend Marshall Lewis, said it was rare enough and since I had rolled it fairly he would let me keep it. Anyway, back to Paran.
Obviously, I play fighters. That's my preferred class. Some like Thieves (excuse me, ROGUES), some like Magic Users or Clerics. I like fighters. Part of the reason why I play these games in my 30's is to relieve stress. Nothing like chucking some dice and feeding some orc your sword. Right away, I knew where the 3 17's would go and that this guy had the best chance of survival. Third Edition D&D or D&D D20 (take your choice of titles) FINALLY put something in the book I've been waiting for. Two Weapon Fighting, also known as Ambidexterity or Two Fisted, is something I really like in a character. One thing I threw in just for fun was to give him red eyes. Maybe to denote Momma Paran was doing something she shouldn't or maybe not. I had thought about maybe using it as a sign of Dragon Blood and possibly playing a Sorcerer. May still do that one day. Seeing Paran as the heavy hitter, his face was an easy choice. Who's the heavies hitter in fantasy lore? Conan the Barbarian, of course. Many times I called Paran "Little Conan", and have tired to guide him towards what I think Conan would be like. Paran is just damn fun to play, usually he goes to fight club, drinks and them goes back to the brothel or whatever woman he finds. Paran was easy to play, and when in doubt I would repeat a mantra. "You know what Paran would do wouldn't you? Paran would kick ass". More than once he allowed me to live out some fantasy of just taking no crap from no one or just being a big strong, fast, powerful jerk.
The name comes from one version of the comic book character Hawkman. Paran Katar was the Post Crisis (DCU) Silver Age Hawkman's father's name. I just thought it was a cool name. The question for a pair of wings came later... :)

Highlight/Memories:
Paran has more than a few of these. Among them would be...
1. One time we had come across a human town that had been taken over by lizard people. Inside one of the "deserted" buildings we found a hysterical woman who had been hiding from the lizard men. She started screaming and was about to give our position away to the lizard men. I don't remember exactly how it happened, but somehow the building we were in caught fire. The woman still screaming and carrying on, Paran looks at her and says "I don't need this $hit" and slugs her. He jumps out a window, carrying her unconscious form off.
2. In possibly my best and brightest moment was this one. We had been ambushed by some group in cloaks, but we took them. We found out where they were suppose to report after defeating us. Paran had the idea of donning the cloaks and going to the inn. We went in and someone motioned towards us. By the time we sat down together, the contact realized his mistake. Paran grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him back down. Paran kept asked him who hired the group to kill us, contact refused.
"I'm going to ask you nicely one more time, then the kid gloves come off. Who hired you and this group to kill us?"
Still met with more denials of knowledge, Paran grabs his index finger and breaks it backwards.
"Who hired you?"
Still more "I don't know, I don't know".
Middle finger broke backwards.
"Who hired you?"
"I don't know, man, I'm telling you."
Ring finger broke.
"OK, OK, I'll tell you."
Paran was nice enough to break the fingers back properly for him as he came with us.
3. The defense of the temple I believe was the same night. I came up with the idea of two fighters (not the class, more just physical combatants) and one archer at each entrance. After our group mess up used a sleep spell on everyone present, it was easy to tell the lizard men from the now asleep humans. That night was the only time I won "Best Player" for the evening. I was rather proud of myself that night.
