Lighthouses

       There is something about a lighthouse---working or abandoned---that signals to us.  History, shipwrecks, and lonely vigils seem romantic at this distance, although they most assuredly were not to those who lived in them or because of them.  But the lighthouse as an image of hope, integrity, and the search for some kind of meaning or truth also speaks to us.  And they make dramatic photographs. Here in Michigan, the state in the lower 48 with the most coastline, we are blessed with many lighthouses.  However, some are in danger now that the Coast Guard has gone to other signaling methods.
